Zippo Pat Bars (1964–1988) was a famous Quarter Horse. He was a great racehorse and show horse. He also became a very important father (sire) to many other successful horses.

About Zippo Pat Bars

Zippo Pat Bars was born in 1964. He was a sorrel (reddish-brown) stallion, which means he was a male horse. His breeder, Paul Curtner, raised him. Zippo Pat Bars's father was a famous Thoroughbred horse named Three Bars. His mother was Leo Pat, whose father was Leo. When Zippo Pat Bars was just a baby horse, called a weanling, someone offered $20,000 for him! But Paul Curtner said no.

Zippo Pat Bars's Racing Career

Zippo Pat Bars raced for two years. He competed in eighteen races. He won five races and came in second place four times. In 1966, he earned a special award called a Race Register of Merit from the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). He also got an AAA speed rating, which means he was very fast! He earned $1,855 from his races.

Sadly, Zippo Pat Bars got hurt when he was two years old. He fractured (broke) two bones in his back during an accident in his stall. Because of this injury, he could not race in the big 1966 All American Futurity race.

Zippo Pat Bars as a Father

After his racing career ended, Zippo Pat Bars became a breeding horse. He had many famous children, including Zippo Pine Bar, Scarborough Fair, The Invester, and Mr Pondie Zip.

Two of his sons, Zippo Pine Bar and The Invester, became so famous that they were put into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. They also joined the National Snaffle Bit Association Hall of Fame. Even his grandson, Zippos Mr Good Bar, was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2019 and the National Snaffle Bit Association Hall of Fame in 2000.

Zippo Pat Bars was the father of:

  • Nine AQHA Champions (horses that won many awards)
  • Sixteen Superior Western Pleasure Horses (horses that are excellent at a specific riding style)
  • Four Superior Halter Horses (horses judged on their looks and build)

In 1996, Zippo Pat Bars himself was inducted into the NSBA Hall of Fame.

Death and Special Honors

Zippo Pat Bars passed away on May 1, 1988, because of heart problems. In 2002, he was honored by being inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. This is a very special award for horses who have made a big impact on the Quarter Horse breed.
