Joe Reed (1921–1947), often called Joe Reed P-3, was a very important Quarter Horse racehorse. He lived during the early days of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). He became a famous father horse, meaning many of his children and grandchildren were also great horses.

Life and Racing Career

Joe Reed P-3 was one of the first horses registered with the AQHA. His registration number was 3. He was born in 1921. His parents were both famous short-track racehorses. Joe Reed was a chestnut stallion, which means he was a male horse with a reddish-brown coat. Henry Lindsey from Granger, Texas bred him.

When Joe Reed was registered with the AQHA, J. J. Slankard of Elk City, Oklahoma owned him. Joe Reed passed away on May 19, 1947. His father was a Thoroughbred horse. This horse mainly raced on short tracks. He once famously lost a race to a horse named Pan Zareta.

Joe Reed's mother was a Quarter Horse mare from Louisiana. Her background has always been a bit of a mystery. People say that the decision to breed Della Moore to Joe Blair happened by chance. Horse caretakers wanted to quiet the two horses. They were making a lot of noise and disturbing people nearby. So, the horses were bred to make them calm down. Della Moore's owner, Henry Lindsey, did not know about this at first.

Months later, it was clear Della Moore was going to have a foal. Lindsey then found out what had happened. Joe Reed later became a good match racer himself. A match race is when two horses race against each other. All of his racing happened before the AQHA was officially formed.

Breeding Record and Honors

Joe Reed was the father of many amazing horses. Some of his famous children include Joe Reed II, Red Joe of Arizona, Joe Sunday, Joe's Last, and Catechu. He was also the great-grandfather of Leo. Joe Reed P-3 had six children who earned a Race Register of Merit. This is a special award for horses that perform very well in races.

Many of his daughters also became mothers of horses that earned Race Registers of Merit. His son, Joe Reed II, was named the Champion Quarter Running Stallion for 1942–1943. His grandson, Jose Uno, was added to the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Hall of Fame. This Hall of Fame honors horses that are great at "cutting," which is a sport where a horse separates a cow from a herd.

Even more distant family members of Joe Reed are also famous. These include Zippo Pat Bars, Colonel Freckles, Goetta, Peppy San, Rugged Lark, Sonny Dee Bar, The Invester, and Zippo Pine Bar. All of these horses are members of the AQHA Hall of Fame.

Joe Reed himself was honored in 1992. He was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. This is a very high honor for a Quarter Horse.
