Life and Career of İlhan Selçuk
Early Life and Education
İlhan Selçuk was born in 1925 in Aydın Province, a region in western Turkey. His mother had Armenian family roots. He studied law at Istanbul University and finished his degree in 1950.
After university, Selçuk started writing for different magazines and newspapers. He also wrote many books and novels. Some of his well-known books include Ağlamak ve Gülmek (Laughing and Crying) and Japon Gülü (Japanese Rose). Other works were Ziverbey Köşku (Ziverbey Mansion), Güzel Amerikalı (The Beautiful American), and Düşünüyorum Öyleyse Vurun (I Think, Therefore Shoot Me).
Journalism and Challenges
From 1961 to 1967, Selçuk wrote for a political magazine called Yön. He was a strong voice in Turkish media.
In 1971, after a difficult time in Turkey, İlhan Selçuk was held for questioning at a place called Ziverbey Villa. This was a challenging period for him.
Later, Selçuk became the editor in chief of Cumhuriyet, a major Turkish daily newspaper. This newspaper was known for its secular views, meaning it supported the separation of government and religion.
In 2008, Selçuk was briefly held for questioning again as part of a large investigation. Many people, including politicians like Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, believed these events affected his health. He was released the next day and continued to face legal proceedings without being arrested.
Later Years and Legacy
İlhan Selçuk passed away in Istanbul on June 21, 2010, at the age of 85. He had been in the hospital since January 2010, receiving treatment for brain disease and a recent stroke.
He was buried in the Hacıbektaş district of Nevşehir. His grave is next to his brother, Turhan Selçuk, who was a famous caricaturist and had passed away just a few months earlier in March 2010. İlhan Selçuk is remembered as an important figure in Turkish journalism and literature.
