Şebnem Ferah (born 12 April 1972) is a famous Turkish singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She was the main singer for the all-girl hard rock band Volvox until 1994. After that, she started her own very successful solo music career. Her music style changes from pop rock to hard rock, and her newer albums often have a stronger hard rock sound.

Early Life and Music Start

Şebnem Ferah was born on April 12, 1972, in Yalova, Turkey. Her parents were from Skopje, which is now in North Macedonia. She first learned about music and instruments from her father, who was also a teacher. She grew up listening to her father play traditional folk songs from the Rumelian region. He used instruments like the bağlama, mandolin, and piano.

First Bands and Volvox

Şebnem got her first guitar when she was in high school in Bursa. She took lessons to learn how to play it. In her second year, she and her friends formed a group called Pegasus. They played their first show at a rock festival in Bursa in 1987. After a while, Pegasus broke up. In 1988, Şebnem started a new band called Volvox with four of her friends. They named the band after a tiny microorganism they learned about in biology class.

After high school, Şebnem went to Middle East Technical University to study economics. She moved to Ankara with her sister. There, she met Özlem Tekin, who also became a well-known pop-rock musician in Turkey. Özlem joined Volvox. For about a year and a half, Volvox found it hard to practice because some members lived in Istanbul. Şebnem decided she didn't want to be an economist. She left university and moved back to Istanbul.

In Istanbul, she studied English at Istanbul University. For two years, she performed with Volvox in different bars. The band eventually broke up in 1994.

Solo Music Career

Even though Volvox was together for a short time, it helped Şebnem Ferah get noticed by people in the music business. A famous Turkish singer named Sezen Aksu and her music partner Onno Tunç saw Volvox on TV. Soon after, Şebnem sang backup vocals for Sezen Aksu.

First Albums and Success

In 1996, Şebnem Ferah released her first solo album, Kadın (Woman). This album had some of her most famous songs, like Vazgeçtim Dünyadan (I Gave up on the World), Yağmurlar (Rains), and Fırtına (Storm). The songs were produced very well by İskender Paydaş. Kadın was a big hit, and Şebnem started playing many concerts in clubs and arenas. In 1998, she even provided the singing voice for Ariel in the Turkish version of The Little Mermaid movie!

Three years after her first album, Ferah released her second album, Artık Kısa Cümleler Kuruyorum (I Form Short Sentences Now). She worked with the same production team. This album used fewer artificial sounds and had a more natural feel. This album helped her gain a very loyal group of fans.

In 2001, Ferah released her third album, Perdeler (Curtains). This album had a more acoustic sound. The lead song was Sigara (Cigarette). On the title track, Perdeler, she worked with the Finnish band Apocalyptica.

Her next album was Kelimeler Yetse (If Words Were Enough), released in 2003. This album included popular songs like "Ben Şarkımı Söylerken" ("While I'm Singing My Song") and "Mayın Tarlası" ("Minefield").

In 2005, she released her fifth album, Can Kırıkları (The Shards of Heart). This album showed her heavier side and had a more distorted, rock sound. After a concert tour across Turkey, she released a live CD and DVD called 10 Mart 2007 Istanbul Konseri in 2007.

In December 2009, she released her sixth album, Benim Adım Orman (My Name is Forest). This album had both slow rock songs, like Bazı Aşklar (Some Loves), and hard rock songs, like Merhaba (Hello). This album showed her strong connection to rock music.

On April 12, 2018, she released her newest album, Parmak İzi (Fingerprint). It features the song Koridor (Corridor).
