Ángel Herrera Oria (born November 19, 1886 – died July 28, 1968) was an important Spanish figure. He was a journalist, a Roman Catholic politician, and later became a Cardinal.

He started a special center called the Instituto Social León XIII. This center was created to share the social teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. It was later renamed Fundación Pablo VI in honor of Pope Paul VI. Pope Paul VI was the one who made Ángel Herrera Oria a Cardinal in 1965.

Because of his good work and holy life, the process to declare him a saint has begun. He is now known as a Servant of God.

Life Story of Ángel Herrera Oria

His Early Life and Schooling

Ángel Herrera Oria was born in Spain on November 19, 1886. He was one of fifteen children in his family. Four of his brothers became Jesuit priests, and another went to work as a missionary in China.

He finished his high school studies with the Jesuit Fathers in Valladolid. Then, he studied law at the University of Deusto. In 1905, he also earned a law degree from the University of Salamanca. Later, from 1936 to 1940, he studied for church-related subjects at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

In 1908, Ángel Herrera Oria joined the State Lawyers Corps. This meant he worked as a lawyer for the government. He spent a year working in Burgos. After that, he returned to Madrid. There, he joined a Catholic group called the Marian Congregation of los Luises.

His Work in Journalism and Catholic Action

On December 3, 1909, he became the president of a new group called the Asociación Católica Nacional de Jóvenes Propagandistas. This group aimed to spread Catholic ideas. He also became the director of a newspaper called El Debate from 1911 to 1933. This newspaper became one of the most widely read Catholic newspapers in Spain.

Ángel Herrera Oria was very active in creating new organizations. He founded Editorial Católica, which was a leading Catholic publishing company. He also started the El Debate School of Journalism, which was the first journalism school in Spain. He helped create the Confederación Nacional Católica Agraria and the Centro de Estudios Universitarios e Instituto Social Obrero.

He also helped start Pax Romana, an international Catholic student movement. He was involved in the early steps of the Summer University of Santander. From 1933 to 1936, he served as the president of the Central Board of Spanish Catholic Action. This was a very important role in the Catholic Church in Spain.

When the Second Spanish Republic was declared, he founded a political party called Acción Nacional. This party later changed its name to Acción Popular. In 1933, he was chosen to be the president of Spanish Catholic Action. At this time, he stopped being the editor of El Debate. In the same year, his group, the ACNdP, founded the Centro de Estudios Universitarios (CEU). This institution became a major center for university studies.
