The Énard River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Chibougamau Lake. The river runs through the areas of Eeyou Istchee James Bay and Chibougamau. These areas are part of the Nord-du-Québec region.
The entire river flows through two special land areas called Queylus and Obalski townships. You can reach the river's area using Route 167. This road goes along the west and south sides of Chibougamau Lake. Route 167 connects the towns of Chibougamau and Saint-Félicien, Quebec. A Canadian National Railway bridge crosses the Énard River where it leaves Inlet Lake.
The river's surface is usually frozen from early November until mid-May. However, it's safest to walk or travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

Where is the Énard River?
The Énard River is surrounded by many other waterways.
- To the north, you'll find Chibougamau Lake (specifically Inlet Bay) and Dorés Lake (Chibougamau River).
- To the east, there are the Armitage River and Boisvert River (Normandin River tributary).
- To the south, you can find Audet Creek, Palmer Lake, Chevrier Lake (Obatogamau River), La Dauversière Lake, and Obatogamau Lakes.
- To the west, there are Merrill Lake, the Chibougamau River, Muscocho Lake, the Obatogamau River, and Eau Jaune Lake.
Where the River Starts
The Énard River begins at Inlet Lake. This lake is about 1.4 kilometers (0.87 miles) long and sits at an elevation of 379 meters (1,243 feet). Inlet Lake is located in Queylus Township, between Route 167 and the railway tracks.
The start of the river is:
- 5.7 kilometers (3.5 miles) south of where the Énard River flows into Chibougamau Lake.
- 22.6 kilometers (14.0 miles) south of the main mouth of Chibougamau Lake.
- 5.8 kilometers (3.6 miles) southeast of the center of Obalski hamlet.
- 10.0 kilometers (6.2 miles) southeast of the mouth of Dorés Lake (Chibougamau River).
- 23 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of downtown Chibougamau.
- 13.6 kilometers (8.5 miles) northwest of the border between Eeyou Istchee Baie-James and the Regional County Municipality of Le Domaine-du-Roy.
How the River Flows
From Inlet Lake, the Énard River flows northeast for about 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles).
- For the first 4.2 kilometers (2.6 miles), it flows north. It crosses the Canadian National Railway line and reaches the southern edge of the town of Chibougamau.
- Then, for 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles), it continues northeast within the town of Chibougamau (Obalski Township) until it reaches its end point.
The Énard River empties into the south shore of Inlet Bay. This bay is a part of Chibougamau Lake. On the west side of Inlet Bay is the Devlin Peninsula, which is 6.4 kilometers (4.0 miles) long. This part of the lake has many islands, including Yvonne, Alphonse, and Boulder islands.
Journey to the Bay
From where the Énard River joins Chibougamau Lake, the water travels about 17.6 kilometers (10.9 miles) across the lake. It goes north, passing around Portage Island, until it reaches the lake's main outlet. Chibougamau Lake is the main source lake for the Chibougamau River.
After leaving Chibougamau Lake, the water flows through Dorés Lake (Chibougamau River). Then, it generally heads southwest along the Chibougamau River. This river eventually meets the Opawica River. From that meeting point, the water continues southwest through the Waswanipi River. It flows to the east shore of Goéland Lake (Waswanipi River). The Waswanipi River then crosses Goéland Lake to the northwest and flows into Lake Matagami. Finally, the water travels along the Nottaway River and empties into Rupert Bay, which is part of James Bay.
The mouth of the Énard River is located:
- 8.4 kilometers (5.2 miles) northeast of the mouth of Dorés Lake (Chibougamau River).
- 17.1 kilometers (10.6 miles) south of the main mouth of Chibougamau Lake.
- 120.5 kilometers (74.9 miles) northeast of where the Chibougamau River meets the Opawica River.
- 382 kilometers (237 miles) south of the mouth of the Nottaway River.
- 39.1 kilometers (24.3 miles) east of the village center of Chapais, Quebec.
- 18.2 kilometers (11.3 miles) southeast of downtown Chibougamau.
