Épendes is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of Vaud, within the Jura-Nord Vaudois area.

History of Épendes
Épendes was first mentioned in old records in 1154. Back then, it was known as Spinles. A few years later, in 1174, its name changed to Espinnes.
This municipality is home to the historic Château d'Épendes, which is a castle. It also has the Observatory of Épendes, where people can visit and learn about stars and planets.
Geography of Épendes
Épendes covers an area of about 4.8 square kilometers (1.9 square miles). A large part of this land, about 75%, is used for farming. This means lots of fields for crops and pastures for animals.
About 14% of the land is covered by forests, with many trees. The remaining 9% is where buildings and roads are located. A small part, about 2%, includes rivers or lakes.
Épendes used to be part of the Yverdon District. But in 2006, it became part of the new Jura-Nord Vaudois district.
Coat of Arms
Every town has a special symbol called a coat of arms. Épendes' coat of arms shows a red background with a gold stripe. On top of this, there's a green reed plant with black fruit. Below the reed, there are two green frogs.
People and Population
Épendes has a population of about 315 people. A small part of the population, around 11%, are people from other countries. Over the past ten years, the number of people living here has grown by about 8%.
Most people in Épendes speak French as their main language. About 90% of the residents speak French. Other languages spoken include Portuguese and German.
The population includes many young people. About 13.6% are children aged 0-9, and 11% are teenagers aged 10-19. The town has a mix of young adults, middle-aged people, and seniors.
In 2000, there were 132 households in Épendes. On average, about 2.4 people lived in each home. Many homes were single-family houses, making up about half of all buildings.
Politics in Épendes
In the 2007 federal election, people in Épendes voted for different political parties. The most popular party was the SVP, which received about 31% of the votes.
Other popular parties included the SP, the FDP, and the Green Party. About 47% of eligible voters participated in this election.
Economy and Jobs
In 2010, Épendes had a low unemployment rate of 2.1%. This means most people who wanted jobs had them.
The town's economy is divided into three main parts:

Education in Épendes
Many adults in Épendes have completed higher education. About 40% have finished upper secondary education, and 12.5% have gone on to university or other higher schools.
In the 2009/2010 school year, there were 44 students in the Épendes school district. The local school system provides two years of optional pre-school.
Students attend primary school for four years. There were 25 students in the primary school program. The lower secondary school program lasts for six years, with 19 students attending.
Some students from Épendes attend schools in other towns. Also, some students from other towns come to Épendes for school.
Transportation
Épendes has its own railway station, called Ependes. This station is on the Jura Foot line. From here, people can take trains to nearby towns like Grandson, Yverdon-les-Bains, and Lausanne.
