Early Life and Education

İsmail Erez was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on September 28, 1919. His parents, Hasan Tahsin Erez and Emine Şahande, were both lawyers. Sadly, his mother passed away when he was only two years old.

He was a very bright student. He graduated with high honors from Galatasaray High School. After that, he went on to study at the School of Political Science in 1939. He finished his degree in 1943.

A Career in Diplomacy

After finishing his studies, İsmail Erez began working for the Turkish Foreign Service. This is the part of the government that handles relationships with other countries. He worked in many different roles.

He represented Turkey at important international groups. These included the United Nations, the World Health Organization (WHO), and UNESCO. These organizations work to solve global problems and promote peace.

Later, he worked at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C., in the United States. An embassy is like a country's office in another nation.

On December 19, 1967, he became the Turkish Ambassador to Beirut, Lebanon. He also served as an envoy to Kuwait at the same time. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat representing their country.

In 1970, he was appointed Ambassador to Italy. From 1972 to 1974, he worked back in Turkey at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Finally, on November 2, 1974, he became the Turkish Ambassador to France.

Tragic End

On October 24, 1975, İsmail Erez was in Paris, France. He was returning from an event. As his car neared the Turkish Embassy building, a group of armed individuals attacked his vehicle.

During this attack, İsmail Erez and his driver, Talip Yener, were both killed. This event deeply saddened people in Turkey. It happened just two days after another Turkish ambassador was killed in Austria.
