Important Events of 1229
The Sixth Crusade Ends
On February 18, 1229, a big event happened during the Crusades. These were a series of religious wars. Emperor Frederick II signed a peace agreement, called a truce, with al-Kamil, who was the Sultan of Egypt. This truce lasted for ten years.
What was special about this truce? Emperor Frederick got back important cities like Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem. He did this without any fighting! Also, he did not have the support of the Pope, who was the leader of the Catholic Church.
A month later, on March 18, the Sixth Crusade officially ended with this truce. Emperor Frederick II was then crowned the King of Jerusalem.
New Places and Learning
In 1229, people from Catalonia (a region in modern-day Spain) took control of the island of Mallorca. They captured it from the Muslims who lived there.
This year also saw the start of new places for learning. The University of Toulouse was founded in Toulouse, France. This new university became an important center for education.
Also, the city of Turku was founded in Finland. This city grew to be a key place in the region.
University Strike
Students and teachers at the University of Paris in France went on strike in 1229. This was a big event for universities at the time.

- On January 17, Albert of Buxhoeveden, a soldier from Germany, passed away.
- Yaqut al-Hamawi, a famous Arab writer and geographer, also died this year. He was known for writing about people's lives and different places.
