- Around this time, a powerful leader named Sundiata began to rule in the ancient kingdom of Mali in West Africa.

- March 9 – The Bulgarian leader, Ivan Asen II, won a big victory. He defeated Theodore of Epirus near the village of Klokotnitsa.
