Europe
The Battle of Benevento
On February 26, a major battle happened in Italy. An army led by Charles, the Count of Anjou, fought against forces led by King Manfred of Sicily. Charles won this battle, and King Manfred was killed. After this victory, Pope Clement IV made Charles the new king of Sicily and Naples.
Peace in England
In England, a big conflict called the Second Barons' War was coming to an end. Supporters of the rebel leader Simon de Montfort offered a peace deal to the king. This offer was known as the Dictum of Kenilworth. After some small changes, everyone agreed to the peace plan the next year.
Scotland and Norway Make Peace
A war between Scotland and Norway also ended in 1266. King Alexander III of Scotland and King Magnus VI of Norway signed the Treaty of Perth. This agreement gave the Western Isles and the Isle of Man to Scotland. In return, Scotland paid a large sum of money to Norway.

The Polo Family's Journey
Niccolo and Maffeo Polo, who were the father and uncle of the famous explorer Marco Polo, reached Kublai Khan's capital city. This city was called Khanbaliq, which is now Beijing in China. Their visit set the stage for Marco Polo's own famous journey, which started five years later. Kublai Khan sent the Polos back with a message for the pope. He asked the pope to send wise teachers from the West to the Mongol Empire. However, this request was mostly not followed.
The Mamluk Sultan Expands His Power
The Mamluk sultan named Baibars continued to make his empire bigger. He captured the city of Byblos (which is in modern-day Lebanon) and the important castle of Toron from the Crusader armies. He also defeated the Armenians in a place called Cilicia.
