Big Events of 1264
War in England: The Second Barons' War
In England, a major conflict called the Second Barons' War began. This was a civil war, which means people from the same country were fighting each other. It was a struggle between King Henry III of England and a group of powerful nobles, led by Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester. The barons wanted more say in how the country was run.
The Battle of Lewes
One of the most important battles of this war happened between May 12 and May 14. It was called the Battle of Lewes, fought in a place called Sussex. In this battle, Simon de Montfort's forces won a huge victory. They even managed to capture King Henry III and his son, Edward, who would later become king.
After this victory, Simon de Montfort became very powerful. For about 15 months, he was like the "uncrowned king of England" because he had so much control. However, Edward I eventually escaped and fought to get the throne back.
New Laws in Ireland
On June 18, something very important happened in Ireland. The Parliament of Ireland met for the first time in a place called Castledermot in County Kildare. A parliament is a group of people who make laws for a country. This meeting was the first time we know for sure that Ireland's own law-making group came together.
Changes in Spain
In Spain, King James I of Aragon was busy taking back land. He "reconquered" the cities of Orihuela and Elx from the Moors. The Moors were people who had ruled these areas for over 500 years and followed the Islamic faith. This was a big step in the Christian kingdoms taking back control of Spain.
New States in Germany
The Thuringian War of Succession finally ended in 1264. This war was about who would rule a region called Thuringia. Because of this, a new state called Hesse gained its independence. This meant Hesse became a free state within the Holy Roman Empire, which was a large group of lands in central Europe.
New Noble Titles
In England, a new important title was created. It was called the Baron de Ros. This title is special because it's the oldest noble title in England that has been passed down continuously through families. It was created by a special order called a "writ of summons."
