Part of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season |
The 2005 Azores subtropical storm was a special kind of tropical cyclone that happened during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. This storm was not given a name by the National Hurricane Center (NHC). This is because experts only found out about it after the hurricane season was over.
The storm started in the Atlantic Ocean. It became a "subtropical cyclone" on October 4, 2005. It did not last for very long. The storm moved over the Azores islands. It then stopped being a subtropical cyclone on October 5. What was left of this storm later helped form Hurricane Vince. After the hurricane season ended, the NHC checked all the weather data. They wanted to make sure no storms were missed. That is when they found this storm, which had not been noticed while it was active.
How the Storm Formed and Moved
This storm began as a weather system. It was located west of the Canary Islands on September 28. Over the next few days, this weather system grew stronger. By October 3, it turned into a low pressure system. This means it was an area where the air pressure was lower than its surroundings.
Thunderstorms around this system became more active. This made it turn into a "subtropical depression". A subtropical depression is a type of storm that has features of both tropical and non-tropical storms.
Around the same time, the depression started moving northeast. It also gained more strength. It then became a subtropical storm. This is stronger than a subtropical depression. The storm got a little bit stronger later that day. It then moved across the Azores islands. After passing over the islands, the storm began to lose its power. It weakened as it moved north-northeast. The storm finally ended on October 5. The leftover parts of this storm later helped create Subtropical Storm Vince.
Impacts and What We Learned
The storm brought strong winds to parts of the Azores. The strongest winds were felt on Santa Maria Island. There, wind gusts reached 59 mph (94 km/h). Ponta Delgada also had wind gusts of 52 mph (85 km/h). Luckily, there was no damage. No one was hurt or died because of this storm.
The NHC did not officially call it a subtropical storm until April 10, 2006. Each year, the NHC reviews all weather data. They do this to make sure they did not miss any storms. If this storm had been found while it was active, it would have been named "Tammy".
