Part of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season

Tropical Storm Lee was a weak tropical storm that formed for a short time over the central Atlantic Ocean in late August and early September 2005. Lee was the twelfth named storm of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.

Tropical Storm Lee started as a tropical depression east of the Lesser Antilles on August 28. The next day, it became weaker and turned into a tropical low. The low then moved north and grew stronger. It became a tropical storm for a short time on August 31. Lee quickly weakened again into a remnant low and was later absorbed by a cold front on September 2.

How the Storm Moved

A tropical wave moved away from the coast of Africa on August 24. As it traveled across the Atlantic Ocean, it grew into an area of low pressure. On August 28, it became Tropical Depression Thirteen. At this time, it was about 960 miles (1550 km) east of the Lesser Antilles.

Because of strong wind shear (winds blowing in different directions at different heights), the depression started to break apart. It quickly weakened into a tropical low late on August 29. Even though it was expected to weaken, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) thought it might get a little stronger later.

The low slowly moved north, then turned northeast because of another weather system that was not tropical. As it moved northeast, the low started to get organized again and became stronger on August 31. That afternoon, the depression strengthened even more and became Tropical Storm Lee.

It reached its strongest point with winds of 40 mph (65 km/h), located between Bermuda and the Azores. At first, experts thought Lee was a tropical storm for only 6 hours. However, they later found out that Lee stayed a tropical storm for 12 hours instead.

Lee quickly weakened into a remnant low. It moved to the west of the non-tropical system that was nearby. On September 1, the two systems began to join together. Lee started to fall apart as it merged with the non-tropical system. By the next day, the remnant low was completely absorbed by a cold front.

What Happened Because of Lee

Because Lee stayed far away from land, it did not cause any problems or harm any people.

Naming and Records for Lee

When Tropical Storm Lee formed on August 31, it was the second earliest time in a season for the 12th named tropical storm to develop. It formed two days after the record held by Hurricane Luis in 1995.

This made Lee one of the few storms in the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season that did not set a record for being the earliest nth storm to form. Also, while this was the first time the name Lee was used for an Atlantic storm, it had been used before to name three storms in the Western Pacific Ocean. Since Lee did not cause any problems or harm anyone, its name was not retired by the World Meteorological Organization. It will be on the list of names for the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season.
