  • Timeline of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season

The 2019 Atlantic hurricane season was a very active period for storms. It was the fourth year in a row with more storms than average. During this season, 20 tropical cyclones formed in the Atlantic Ocean. Out of these, 18 were strong enough to be given names.

The official hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 each year. However, storms sometimes form outside these dates. In 2019, the first storm, Subtropical Storm Andrea, formed on May 20. This made 2019 the fifth year in a row with an early storm. This broke a record that had stood since the 1950s.

The first hurricane of the season was Barry, which formed in early July. Later, Hurricane Dorian became a very powerful Category 5 hurricane on September 1. This was the fourth year in a row to have at least one Category 5 hurricane. Tropical Storm Imelda caused huge floods in Texas in September. It was one of the wettest tropical storms ever in the U.S.

Another Category 5 hurricane, Lorenzo, formed on September 29. This made 2019 one of the few seasons with more than one Category 5 hurricane. Lorenzo also became the farthest east Category 5 hurricane ever recorded. The season officially ended with Tropical Storm Sebastian on November 25.

As mentioned, Subtropical Storm Andrea started the season early on May 20. No storms formed in June. Activity picked up in July with Hurricane Barry. Tropical Depression Three formed shortly after Barry.

After Tropical Depression Three faded, things were quiet again for almost a month. Then, on August 21, Tropical Storm Chantal formed. This made the 2019 season the second-latest starting season of the 21st century. Chantal disappeared on August 24. Later that same day, Dorian began to form. On August 26, another tropical depression formed near the coast of North Carolina.

How the 2019 Storms Affected People

This table lists all the storms from the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. It shows how long each storm lasted, its name, and where it made landfall (hit land). It also includes how much damage each storm caused and the number of deaths.

Deaths listed in parentheses are indirect deaths. This means they were related to the storm but not directly caused by it. For example, a car accident during a storm would be an indirect death. All damage amounts are in U.S. dollars.
