Since March 2, 2026, a conflict has been happening in Lebanon between Israel and a Lebanese group called Hezbollah. This conflict has caused many deaths and forced over a million people in Lebanon to leave their homes. This is about 20% of the country's population, creating a very difficult situation for families.

This conflict is a big part of a larger struggle happening across the Middle East and is also connected to the ongoing Israeli–Lebanese conflict.

Even after a peace agreement in November 2024, Israel continued attacks in Lebanon almost every day. These attacks caused many deaths, including civilians. On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, and a leader of Iran was killed. In response to these attacks in Lebanon and Iran, Hezbollah launched rockets and drones toward Israel. Israel then attacked areas in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Israeli attacks in Lebanon have caused entire families to die. Israel started moving troops on the ground in southern Lebanon on March 16, 2026.

After Hezbollah launched attacks on March 2, Lebanon's government publicly criticized Hezbollah. They said Hezbollah acted without the government's permission. The government stated that only the Lebanese state can decide on war and peace. It then asked Hezbollah to stop its military actions and give its weapons to the government. This was to prevent more unauthorized attacks from Lebanese territory.

Understanding the Conflict's Roots

After the Gaza war started in October 2023, Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah have been fighting. This is part of a longer history of disagreements between them since Hezbollah was formed in 1982. Hezbollah launched attacks against Israel for a year, saying it was to support Palestinians after the Gaza conflict began. In response, Israel sent troops into southern Lebanon in October 2024. They left after a peace agreement, arranged by the U.S., at the end of November. During this time, a leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed.

However, between November 2024 and March 2026, the peace agreement was broken several times. Israel continued daily attacks into Lebanon, and Hezbollah rebuilt its military setup and weapons.

On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel started joint attacks against Iran. This was the end result of a political problem that began around the start of the year. Hezbollah criticized these attacks. They said they were sure that their enemies would face failure. During these attacks, a leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, was killed. After Iran confirmed his death on March 1, Hezbollah's leader, Naim Qassem, promised to respond. He said Hezbollah would not leave "the field of honor and resistance." Hezbollah later claimed its attack was an act of self-defense. They said it was because of over a year of Israeli attacks, even with a truce in place. They added that they restarted fighting to make Israel stop its actions and leave Lebanese areas. Hezbollah also stressed that their actions were not related to the 2026 Iran war.

Casualties

Initially, Lebanon's Health Ministry reported at least 31 people died and 149 were injured in the attacks. 20 people died and 91 were wounded in Beirut's southern suburbs. 11 people died and 58 were wounded in southern Lebanon. Many civilians had to leave their homes, fleeing southern areas toward cities like Sidon. By night, the number of deaths rose to 52 and injuries to 154, according to the ministry. By March 12, the death toll in Lebanon reached 687, while 1,774 were wounded.

In the afternoon, the IDF announced that Hussein Makled, a Hezbollah leader, died in the overnight attacks in Beirut. Local media also reported the death of the brother of Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah and his wife in the attacks in Haret Hreik. Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Lebanon announced that its commander, Adham Adnan al-Othman, died in Beirut's southern suburbs.

Effects of the Conflict

According to the UN refugee agency, about 1.4 million Syrian refugees were living in Lebanon in March 2026.

Because of the 2026 Lebanon conflict, thousands of Syrians have returned to Syria. Many used the Joussieh border crossing. A report from March 13, 2026, said that by March 10, about 85,000–90,000 people had crossed from Lebanon to Syria. Of these, 93% were Syrians returning home, and 7% were Lebanese citizens. By March 18, 2026, counting only Syrians, 119,000 people had crossed the border. The total number of people who had crossed the border by then was 125,000.
