64 Studio is a special type of computer program called a Linux distribution. It's based on Debian, another popular Linux system. This software was created for people who work with audio and video. It helps them record, edit, and create all kinds of media.
It works on computers with 64-bit processors (like most newer computers). It also has a version for older 32-bit computers. Because 64 Studio is free software, anyone can download and install it. You can even use it instead of, or alongside, operating systems like Windows.
How 64 Studio Is Different
64 Studio is similar to Debian, but it has some important changes. It uses a special kernel. The kernel is the main part of an operating system. This kernel has "realtime patches." This means it's designed to handle audio and video tasks very quickly.
It also comes with specific programs already chosen for creative users. These programs are good for music and video production. The basic look of the GNOME desktop (how your computer screen looks) is also changed a bit.
64 Studio Releases
The team behind 64 Studio released their first test version, called 'Toe Rag', on August 1, 2006. They named it after the famous all-analogue Toe Rag Studios in London, England.
The first stable version, ready for everyone to use, came out on 2006-11-29. This version was named 'Olympic'. This name honored the work of sound engineers Glyn Johns and Eddie Kramer. They worked at Olympic Studios in London.
The second stable version, called 'Electric', was released on July 27, 2007. This name comes from Electrical Audio. This is a recording studio founded by sound engineer Steve Albini in Chicago, USA.
