Major Events of 843
The biggest event in 843 was the signing of the Treaty of Verdun. This agreement changed the map of Europe significantly.
What Was the Treaty of Verdun?
The Treaty of Verdun was a peace treaty signed in August 843. It divided the large Carolingian Empire into three separate kingdoms. This empire was once ruled by Charlemagne, a very powerful emperor.
Why Was the Empire Divided?
After Charlemagne died, his son Louis the Pious took over. When Louis the Pious died in 840, his three surviving sons started fighting over who would get control of the empire. These sons were Lothair I, Louis the German, and Charles the Bald. To stop the fighting and bring peace, they decided to divide the empire among themselves.
How Was the Empire Split?
- Lothair I received the middle part of the empire. This included areas like modern-day Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, parts of France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. He also kept the title of Emperor.
- Louis the German received the eastern part, which mostly became the Kingdom of East Francia. This area is a big part of what is now Germany.
- Charles the Bald received the western part, which became the Kingdom of West Francia. This area is a big part of what is now France.
This division was a major step in the creation of what would eventually become the modern countries of France and Germany. It also showed the beginning of the end for the unified Carolingian Empire.
