The year 9 AD (also written as IX in Roman numerals) was a special year. It was part of the 1st century. In the Julian calendar, it began on a Tuesday. If we used today's Gregorian calendar, it would have started on a Thursday. Many important things happened in the Roman Empire and in China during this year.

Roman Empire Events
- Illyria Becomes a Province: After a big revolt was stopped, the area called Illyria (which is in parts of modern-day Croatia and Bosnia) became a Roman province. This meant it was directly controlled by Rome.
- Rhine River as a Border: The Rhine River became a very important border. It separated the lands where people spoke Latin (the Roman language) from the lands where people spoke German. This happened after the Roman army, led by a general named Varus, lost a major battle called the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
- Ovid is Banished: A famous Roman poet named Ovid was sent away from Rome. He was sent to a far-off place called Tomis, which is now in Romania.
- Pannonia Joins Rome: The region of Pannonia, which is now mostly Hungary, came under Roman rule.
- New Marriage Law: To help increase the number of families and people in Rome, a new law was passed. It was called the lex Papia Poppaea. This law encouraged people to get married and have children.
- Roman Money Problems: The Roman Empire faced money problems. This was because of a rebellion in the Danube region and Varus's defeat in Germany. To get more money, Rome started two new taxes:
* A five percent tax on things people inherited. * A one percent tax on sales.

- New Dynasty in China: In China, a man named Wang Mang started a new ruling family called the Xin Dynasty. This dynasty did not last very long, ending in the year 25 AD.
