A' Chràlaig is a tall mountain in the Scottish Highlands. It sits north of Loch Cluanie and south of Glen Affric. This mountain is the highest point along Glen Shiel. You can easily climb it from the Cluanie Inn, which is right by the A87 road. The eastern side of A' Chràlaig belongs to the Forestry Commission. It is also part of the beautiful Kintail National Scenic Area.

A' Chràlaig is a well-known mountain in Scotland. Its name comes from the Gaelic words for "the basket." This mountain stands at 1,120 meters (3,675 feet) high. This makes it one of Scotland's highest peaks.
Where is A' Chràlaig Located?
A' Chràlaig is found in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. It is in the Highland council area. The mountain is positioned between two famous glens: Glen Affric to the north and Glen Shiel to the south. It is also close to Loch Cluanie, a large lake.
What Kind of Mountain is A' Chràlaig?
A' Chràlaig is special because it is both a Munro and a Marilyn.
- A Munro is a Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) tall. There are 282 Munros in Scotland. Climbing them all is a popular challenge.
- A Marilyn is a hill or mountain of any height. It must have a "prominence" of at least 150 meters (492 feet). Prominence means how much a peak rises above the land around it. A' Chràlaig has a prominence of 786 meters.
Climbing A' Chràlaig
Many people enjoy hiking up A' Chràlaig. A common starting point is the Cluanie Inn. This inn is easy to reach from the A87 road. The climb offers great views of the surrounding Highlands.
The Cluanie Horseshoe Walk
A' Chràlaig is part of a longer hiking route. This route is sometimes called the "Cluanie Horseshoe." It includes several nearby peaks. These peaks are Stob Coire na Cràlaig, Mullach Fraoch-choire, Sgurr nan Conbhairean, and Sail Chaorainn. Even though A' Chràlaig is the highest peak, it is not always part of the full horseshoe path. There isn't a direct path connecting it to the peaks further east.
