The A724 is a road in Scotland. It runs within South Lanarkshire. The road connects the towns of Rutherglen and Hamilton. This route is very old. It appears on maps from 1755, almost exactly where it is today!

Exploring the A724 Road

Starting in Rutherglen and Cambuslang

The A724 road begins in Rutherglen. It starts at a place called Farme Cross. Here, it meets the A749. The A749 goes north towards Glasgow. It also goes south towards Rutherglen Main Street.

The A724 heads southeast. This is its main direction. Soon, it meets Junction 2 of the M74 motorway. This junction opened in 2011. It lets cars get on and off the motorway easily. The road then goes under a railway bridge. This bridge carries important train lines.

Next, the A724 passes Eastfield. It is briefly a dual carriageway here. This means it has two lanes going in each direction. It then becomes a single carriageway again. The road passes near Trinity High School.

The A724 continues uphill. It goes over another railway line. This is just before Cambuslang railway station. There is also a junction here for the A763. This road crosses the River Clyde.

The A724 then becomes Cambuslang Main Street. This part of the road has shops on one side. It also has a separate area for parking. After a junction with the B759, it becomes a dual carriageway again. This is for a short distance. It then goes back to being a single carriageway.

The road is now called Hamilton Road. It goes over another railway line. Then it passes under a different railway bridge. This bridge carries the Cathcart Circle Line. The road enters Halfway. This area is named "Halfway" because it's halfway between Glasgow and Hamilton. The road here used to be a tram route.

The A724 passes Lightburn and Flemington. It also passes Drumsagard. There is a roundabout here for the shops in Drumsagard.

Driving Through Blantyre and Hamilton

Still called Hamilton Road, the A724 goes through open countryside. This area is part of the green belt. It separates the city from nearby towns. There are cycle lanes along this part of the road.

When the road crosses the Rotten Calder river, it reaches Blantyre. Here, it becomes Glasgow Road. It has a junction with the B758. This road connects to the M74 motorway. It also connects to the A721 and A725.

The A724 continues through Blantyre. It passes shops and Calderside Academy. There are mini-roundabouts for a large supermarket. There are also roundabouts for a leisure centre and an industrial area. The road then meets the elevated A725. This junction is a bit unusual.

After passing Springwell, the road enters Hamilton. It goes past older shops in Burnbank. Then it goes around the south side of Burnbank. This part was built in the 1970s. It helps traffic avoid the busy town centre. The original road through Burnbank is now for local access.

The road then becomes Burnbank Road. It reaches Hamilton West. The main road goes to Peacock Cross. Here, the B755 and the A72 begin. Another part of the road goes past Hamilton West railway station. It also passes a retail park. This part is one-way.

From Peacock Cross, the A724 becomes Union Street. It goes over the Cadzow Burn. It also passes Hamilton Grammar School. Then it becomes Brandon Street. The A724 ends near Hamilton Bus Station. It also ends near Hamilton Central railway station. This area is part of Hamilton's one-way system.

Public Transport Along the A724

The '267' bus service uses most of the A724. This is a main bus route. It is run by First Glasgow. The bus turns onto the B768 Rutherglen Main Street at Richmond Park roundabout.
