Aaron Steven Lanfare (born September 9, 1824 – died August 19, 1875) was an American soldier. He served as a First Lieutenant in the Union Army. He is famous for receiving the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery in the United States military. He earned it for his actions during the American Civil War.

Aaron Steven Lanfare was born in Branford, Connecticut. Before becoming a soldier, he worked as a merchant sailor. This means he worked on ships that carried goods for trade. He joined the army when the Civil War began.
Joining the Union Army
In November 1861, Aaron Lanfare decided to join the Union Army. He enlisted in the 1st Connecticut Cavalry. This was a group of soldiers from his home state of Connecticut. He served in Company B of this regiment.
A Hero in the Civil War
Lanfare fought for the Union side during the American Civil War. This war was fought between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy). He served as a First Lieutenant, which is an officer rank. He was recognized for his bravery during the war. Because of his heroic actions, he received the prestigious Medal of Honor. He continued to serve until August 1865, when the war ended.
Life After the War
After his time in the military, Aaron Lanfare went back to his old job. He returned to working as a merchant marine. This meant he continued to work on ships at sea. Sadly, in 1875, his ship was lost. This happened while he was sailing in the West Indies region. He passed away at sea on August 19, 1875. He was later buried back home in Branford, Connecticut.
