Abdelmajid Lakhal (born November 29, 1939 – died September 27, 2014) was a famous Tunisian theatre and film actor and theatre director. He was known for being a very skilled and flexible performer. He often acted in classic plays by writers like Carlo Goldoni and Anton Chekhov. These plays were translated into Arabic and performed at the Municipal Theatre of Tunis, where they were very popular.

He was also well-known on Arab Television for appearing in many TV movies.

Biography

Early life

Abdelmajid Lakhal was born in Bizerte, Tunisia, on November 29, 1939. He grew up with his family in Hammam-Lif.

Career

Abdelmajid Lakhal said his love for theatre started when he was 16 years old. He joined a student group called 'Jeunes Comédiens' in Hammam-Lif.

In 1960, he became a student at the National Theatre of Music and Dance in Tunis.

In 1965, he directed a play called Georges Dandin by Molière. He worked with the al-Nuhūd Group in Tunis for this play.

From 1966 to 1967, he acted in several plays. These included Flaminio by Robert Merle and Yerma by Federico García Lorca. He also played the Marshall in Molière's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme.

In 1968, he helped direct a play called Hamlet in Hammamet, Tunisia. He worked as an assistant director to Alì Ben Ayed. In 1971, he started his professional directing career. His first play as a professional director was '8 Ladies' by Robert Thomas.

In 1974, he directed The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare. In 1982, he acted as Magid in 'La Noce'. This play was even performed in Paris. He also helped create a show called 'Jafabule'.

Abdelmajid Lakhal also organized tours for the Theatre de Tunis group. They performed in Paris three times. They also toured in Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Vienna, Egypt, and Lebanon.
