Abdollah Javadi Amoli (Persian: عبدالله جوادی آملی; born 5 May 1933) is a respected Twelver Shi'a religious leader and scholar from Iran. He is known as a thoughtful and moderate figure in Iranian politics and Islamic studies. His ideas have been important in guiding the Islamic Republic of Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. He is also known for speaking out about the banking system in Iran.

Early Life and Education

Abdollah Javadi Amoli was born in 1933 in Amol, a city in northern Iran. He came from a family of religious scholars. After finishing elementary school, he began his religious studies at the Amol seminary in 1946. His father, Mirza Abul Hassan Vaez Javadi Amoli, was also a scholar in Amol.

Early Religious Studies

For five years, he studied basic and intermediate religious courses. His father and other scholars taught him. He also began to develop his moral and spiritual understanding at the Imam Hasan al-Askari mosque.

Moving to Tehran and Qom

In 1950, he moved to Tehran to learn from important thinkers of that time. He studied Islamic law (fiqh), principles of religion, philosophy, and mysticism.

In 1955, he moved to Qom, a major center for Islamic studies. There, he continued his advanced studies with famous scholars like Ayatollah Seyyed Hossein Borujerdi and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. He has been especially dedicated to studying and explaining the Quran, the holy book of Islam. His Quran explanation classes started in 1976 and are still ongoing today.

Role in Politics

Javadi Amoli has also played a role in politics. In January 1988, he led a special mission for Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to Mikhail Gorbachev, who was the leader of the USSR at the time.

On November 27, 2009, he stepped down from his important role as the Friday Prayer Leader in Qom. He explained that a person should not hold such a position if they feel they are not being helpful. He had previously expressed concerns about unfair election campaigns. When he announced his resignation, he made it clear that he was leaving for health reasons, not because of disagreements with the government. He still attends Friday prayers in Qom.

Views on Important Issues

Abdollah Javadi Amoli has shared his thoughts on many topics, from art to politics.

Art and Music

When asked about music, Javadi Amoli explained that some things, like prayers or traditional poems (ghazals), can deeply move a person. He believes that while songs might offer a quick, false pleasure, traditional poetry gives a true and lasting joy. He mentioned poems by Hafez and Saadi Shirazi as examples.

He also discussed "spiritual music." He said that a person's heart can become truly soft through prayer and crying during religious moments. This helps them follow God's rules. He believes that pleasant poems and prose can help with this. However, he warned that musical instruments can create a "false" softness. He gave an example: crying because of the suffering of Husayn ibn Ali is different from crying just because of sad music. He sees a danger in what is called "mystical" music.

Political Views

Javadi Amoli believes that Muslim unity comes from understanding differences and finding common ground. He said that the Quran and Logic can bring all Muslims together. He also stated that the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl ul-Bayt (the family of Prophet Muhammad) are key to unity. If Muslims truly follow these teachings, they will be united and avoid disagreements.

In a meeting with a Vatican official in 2016, he said that if followers of different religions truly follow their prophets, there would be no conflict. He believes that groups like Takfiri terrorists and proxy wars are created by powerful nations. He also said that people of different faiths have always lived peacefully in Iran, which he sees as a good example for the world. He stressed that a peaceful society cannot be built by force or war. Instead, he believes that true civilizations are built through divine guidance, knowledge, and writing. He also thinks that reason and religion work together, with reason helping to understand religious teachings.

Nuclear Weapons

In February 2014, Javadi Amoli stated that religion and humanity teach that weapons of mass destruction should not be made. He also criticized how some Western countries label groups like Hezbollah as terrorists while calling other groups "freedom fighters." He believes that definitions of terrorism should come from divine sources and justice, not from changing interests.

Other Views

Javadi Amoli has also spoken about Iran's economy. He believes that Iran should not just export raw materials like crude oil. Instead, he says, "We must process the oil through various means and then export it."

He has also expressed sadness about the low rate of reading books in Iran, even though he sees Iran as a country of wisdom. He has often criticized the practice of usury (charging very high interest) in some banking activities, even when they are called "Islamic banking." He once gave a very emotional speech about usury, saying that some banks "suck the blood of people."
