Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye (born 26 February 1978), known as Abdoulaye Faye, is a former footballer from Senegal. He played as a defender, which means his main job was to stop the other team from scoring goals.
Faye started his football journey in Senegal with clubs like ASEC Ndiambour and Jeanne d'Arc. In 2002, he moved to France to play for Lens. After a loan spell at Istres, he caught the eye of manager Sam Allardyce. Allardyce brought him to England to play for Bolton Wanderers in July 2005.
After two seasons at Bolton, Faye followed Allardyce to Newcastle United. He played there for one season before joining Stoke City in August 2008. At Stoke, he became a very popular player. He even won the Player of the Year award in 2009 and was made captain for the 2009–2010 season.
Later, he played for West Ham United, helping them get promoted to the Premier League. He then joined Hull City and helped them get promoted too. Faye finished his career playing for Sabah FA in Malaysia.

Faye's Football Journey
Starting His Career in Senegal
Abdoulaye Faye was born in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. He began his football career at a club called ASEC Ndiambour. After that, he moved to another Senegalese team, Jeanne d'Arc. In July 2002, he made a big move to Europe, joining Lens in France. At Lens, he played alongside another Senegalese player, Papa Bouba Diop.
Playing for Bolton Wanderers
In July 2005, Faye came to England to play for Bolton Wanderers on a loan deal. He made his first appearance for Bolton against Newcastle United. It was a great debut, as Bolton won 2–0 at home. Faye showed how strong he was in the air, especially against famous striker Alan Shearer.
Bolton's manager, Sam Allardyce, was very impressed with Faye's early performances. In December 2005, Faye signed a permanent contract with Bolton. He was very happy to stay in England.
"I like the English better than the French, they are more pleasant and nicer people. I am having a great time. In France you are almost treated too strictly. Here you work hard, you do your job but are given a little bit more freedom to enjoy life."
During the 2006–07 season, Faye mostly played as a central defender. He formed a strong partnership with Ivorian player Abdoulaye Méïté. Together, they made Bolton's defense very strong, especially at home. Faye also scored two goals against Arsenal in different seasons. These goals helped Bolton win 2–0 and 3–1. Fans loved him for his strong defending.
Time at Newcastle United
On 15 August 2007, news spread that Faye would move to Newcastle United. He was joining his former manager, Sam Allardyce, again. On 31 August 2007, Faye signed a three-year contract with Newcastle. He was introduced to the Newcastle fans during a home game against Wigan Athletic. Faye scored his only goal for Newcastle on 24 February 2008, in a match against Manchester United.
Success at Stoke City
On 15 August 2008, Faye joined Stoke City, a team that had just been promoted to the Premier League. He signed a three-year contract. He played his first game for Stoke in a 3–2 win against Aston Villa.
Faye scored his first goal for Stoke against his old club, Newcastle. It was a late goal in the 90th minute that helped Stoke get a 2–2 draw. He scored against Newcastle again later that season. Faye had a fantastic first season at Stoke. He won both the Players' Player of the Season and the Fans' Player of the Season awards. All the club's supporter groups also voted him player of the year.
Because of his great first season, Faye was made the permanent captain for the 2009–10 season. He continued to play well but also had some injuries. The manager, Tony Pulis, later gave the captaincy to Ryan Shawcross for the 2010–11 season. Faye struggled to play as much that season and was released by the club in May 2011.
"Abdy's contribution to getting the Club where it is today should never be under-estimated, He loved playing for this Football Club and the supporters loved him, so in many respects it is sad to see him move on. But we are moving forward as a Club and unfortunately there are times when you have to make tough decisions that allow you to bring in the new faces which can improve the squad, and this is obviously one of them. We would like to thank Abdy for his contribution over the past three years and wish him well in the future."
Joining West Ham United
In June 2011, after leaving Stoke City, Faye joined West Ham United on a free transfer. This meant he didn't cost any money to sign. He was reunited with manager Sam Allardyce for the third time in his career. Faye was excited to join West Ham, calling it a "great club, a big club." He made his debut for West Ham on 16 August 2011, in a 4–0 win against Watford. At the end of the season, Faye left West Ham after helping them get promoted back to the Premier League.
Playing for Hull City
Faye joined Hull City on 20 July 2012, signing a one-year deal. He played his first game for Hull on 11 August 2012, in a League Cup match against Rotherham United.
On 1 September 2012, Faye scored his first goal for Hull against his former club, Bolton. He jumped high to head the ball into the net. Just a few days later, on 15 September 2012, he scored again against Millwall. Two days after that, he scored his third goal in three games against Leeds United.
Faye played 33 games for Hull in the 2012–13 season. He helped the team get promoted to the Premier League on the very last day of the season. He signed a new one-year contract with Hull on 16 May 2013.
During the 2013–14 season, Faye didn't play as much in the Premier League. He made only 3 appearances. However, he did play in 3 FA Cup matches as Hull City reached the FA Cup final for the first time in their history. Faye was a substitute for the semi-final but did not play in the final. At 36 years old, Faye was released by Hull City at the end of the 2013–14 season.
