Abdoulaye Faye, born on February 26, 1978, is a former professional footballer from Senegal. He was known for playing as a strong defender.
Faye started his football journey in Senegal with clubs like ASEC Ndiambour and Jeanne d'Arc. In 2002, he moved to France to play for Lens. After a loan spell at Istres, he caught the eye of manager Sam Allardyce.
Allardyce brought Faye to England to play for Bolton Wanderers in 2005. After two seasons, he followed Allardyce to Newcastle United. In August 2008, Faye joined Stoke City. He quickly became a fan favorite at Stoke. He was even named the Player of the Year for the 2008–2009 season. For the 2009–2010 season, his manager Tony Pulis made him the team captain.
Later, Faye played for West Ham United, helping them get promoted to the Premier League. He then moved to Hull City, where he also helped the team win promotion in the 2012–2013 season.
Abdoulaye Faye's Football Journey
Starting in Senegal and France
Abdoulaye Faye was born in Dakar, Senegal. He began his football career playing for local teams. First, he played for ASEC Ndiambour, and then for Jeanne d'Arc.
In July 2002, Faye moved to France to join Lens. He played alongside another Senegalese player, Papa Bouba Diop, at Lens. He also spent some time on loan at Istres before moving to England.
Playing for Bolton Wanderers
In July 2005, Faye joined the English club Bolton Wanderers on a loan deal. He made his first appearance for Bolton against Newcastle United. It was a great debut, as Bolton won 2–0 at home. Faye showed how strong he was in the air, especially against famous striker Alan Shearer.
Bolton's manager, Sam Allardyce, was very impressed with Faye's early performances. In December 2005, Faye signed a permanent contract with Bolton. He was very happy to stay in England.
"I like the English better than the French, they are more pleasant and nicer people. I am having a great time. In France you are almost treated too strictly. Here you work hard, you do your job but are given a little bit more freedom to enjoy life."
During the 2006–2007 season, Faye mostly played as a central defender. He formed a strong partnership with Abdoulaye Méïté. Together, they made Bolton's defense very tough to break through, especially at home. Faye even scored two goals against Arsenal in different seasons. His strong heading ability helped Bolton win both matches. He became a favorite player among Bolton fans.
Time at Newcastle United
On August 31, 2007, Faye signed a three-year contract with Newcastle United. He joined his former manager, Sam Allardyce, there. Faye was introduced to the Newcastle fans during a home game. On February 24, 2008, he scored his only goal for Newcastle. It was during a match against Manchester United.
Success with Stoke City
On August 15, 2008, Faye moved to Stoke City, a team that had just been promoted to the Premier League. He signed a three-year contract. He played his first game for Stoke in a 3–2 win against Aston Villa.
Faye scored his first goal for Stoke against his old club, Newcastle. It was a late goal that helped Stoke get a 2–2 draw. He scored against Newcastle again later that season. Faye had a fantastic first season at Stoke. His teammates and fans voted him as the Player of the Season.
Because of his great performance, Faye was made the team captain for the 2009–2010 season. He continued to play well for Stoke, even though he had some injuries. For the 2010–2011 season, manager Tony Pulis gave the captaincy to Ryan Shawcross. Faye didn't play as much that season. He was released by Stoke in May 2011 when his contract ended.
Manager Tony Pulis praised Faye's time at Stoke:
"Abdy's contribution to getting the Club where it is today should never be under-estimated, He loved playing for this Football Club and the supporters loved him, so in many respects it is sad to see him move on. But we are moving forward as a Club and unfortunately there are times when you have to make tough decisions that allow you to bring in the new faces which can improve the squad, and this is obviously one of them. We would like to thank Abdy for his contribution over the past three years and wish him well in the future."
Promotions with West Ham and Hull City
In June 2011, after leaving Stoke City, Faye joined West Ham United. He was reunited with manager Sam Allardyce for the third time. Faye was excited to join the club. He said, "I am very happy to be here at West Ham – this is a great club, a big club and I cannot wait to get started here."
He made his debut for West Ham on August 16, 2011, in a 4–0 win against Watford. Faye helped West Ham get promoted back to the Premier League that season. After helping them achieve promotion, he left the club.
On July 20, 2012, Faye joined Hull City on a one-year deal. He played his first game for Hull on August 11, 2012, in a League Cup match. On September 1, 2012, he scored his first goal for Hull against his former club, Bolton. He headed the ball into the net from a corner kick.
Faye scored two more goals in his next two games. He scored against Millwall and Leeds United. He played 33 games for Hull in the 2012–2013 season. He helped the team win promotion to the Premier League on the last day of the season. He signed a new one-year contract with Hull in May 2013.
During the 2013–2014 season, Faye didn't play as much in the Premier League. He made only 3 appearances. However, he did play in 3 FA Cup matches as Hull City reached the FA Cup final for the first time ever. Faye was not on the bench for the final. At 36 years old, Faye was released by Hull City at the end of the season.
