Abdul Momin Shaykh-e-Imambari (born 1930 – died 8 April 2020) was an important Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, a dedicated teacher, and a respected politician. He was once the leader, or president, of a political group called Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh.

Early Life and Learning

Abdul Momin was born in 1930. His parents, Muhammad Abdus Sattar and Gulbahar Bibi, were Bengali Muslims. He grew up in a village called Purangaon in Nabiganj, which was part of the Habiganj area in the Sylhet district at that time.

His Education Journey

Abdul Momin started his studies at local Islamic schools, known as madrasas. These included Jāmiʿah Saʿdiyyah Raidhar and Jāmiʿah Islāmiyyah Imambari. Later, he traveled to Hindustan (which is now part of India). There, he joined a famous Islamic university called Darul Uloom Deoband.

He spent six years studying at Darul Uloom Deoband. He focused on Hadith studies, which is learning about the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. Some of his important teachers there were Hussain Ahmed Madani, Ibrahim Baliyavi, Syed Fakhrul Hasan, and Merajul Haq. In 1957, he received a special spiritual permission, called khilafat, from his teacher Hussain Ahmed Madani. This meant he could guide others in their spiritual journey.

His Career as a Teacher

After finishing his studies, Abdul Momin returned to Bengal. He spent eight years teaching at Jāmiʿah Islāmiyyah Imambari. He then taught at other madrasas for shorter periods. These included Balidhara madrasa in Dinarpur, Umednagar Title Madrasa in Habiganj, and Jamia Madania of Bishwanath.

Leading Schools

Abdul Momin later became the principal of Jāmiʿah Madaniyyah Nabiganj, where he worked for four years. In 1989, he went back to the Imambari madrasa. He served as its principal and also as Shaykh al-Hadith, which means Professor of Hadith studies. He held these important roles until 2010.

After that, he was the Shaykh al-Hadith of Hossainia Madrasa for one year. From 2012 until his passing, he was the Shaykh al-Hadith of Jamia Darul Qur'an in Sylhet.

His Role in Politics

Abdul Momin was involved in politics from a young age. He was a member of the student group of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, called Jamiat Tulaba-e-Arabia. He later became the leader of the Jamiat's branch in Habiganj District.

Leading a Political Party

In 2000, he was chosen as a patron, or supporter, of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh. After the death of the previous president, Ashraf Ali Bishwanathi, in 2005, Abdul Momin was elected as the president of this nationwide political party. This happened on September 4, 2005.

In 2017, he helped start a large gathering to support the Rohingyas. These are people who had to leave their homes in Myanmar because they faced unfair treatment. The gatherings showed support for them and were also backed by a Bangladeshi politician named Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury.

His Passing and Legacy

Abdul Momin passed away on April 8, 2020. He had many students and followers. Muhiuddin Khan was one of his students. Another follower, Ubaydullah Faruq, became his spiritual successor, known as his khalifah. Abdul Momin's son, Emdadullah, is also a respected scholar.

On September 27, 2020, a special prayer ceremony was held at the Jamia Madania madrasa in Bishwanath. This event honored Abdul Momin and was organized by Shibbir Ahmad Bishwanathi and Hasan bin Fahim.
