Abejuela is a small town, or municipality, located in the province of Teruel in Aragon, Spain. In 2018, only 49 people lived there, making it a very quiet place! It's the southernmost town in Aragon.

The Sierra de Javalambre mountains rise to the north of the town. To the east, you'll find the Sierra del Toro mountains.

What's the Economy Like?

The people of Abejuela mostly earn their living through farming and raising animals. They grow crops like wheat and barley. They also have special farms for truffles, which are a very valuable type of mushroom. Abejuela's truffles are known as some of the best in Spain!

The animals raised here are also very healthy. This is because they are fed almost 100% natural food.

A Glimpse into History

We don't have many old documents about Abejuela. Sadly, most of its historical records were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War.

However, we know some things from stories passed down through generations. The first people to settle here were said to be exiles. They lived in the highest and coldest part of the area, called Almansa. This is where the Santa Margarita hermitage is now located.

It's believed that around the 1400s, the first main buildings in what is now Abejuela were built. These include the local church and a military tower in the town square. Abejuela is special because many of its old buildings are still standing. They have been repaired carefully to keep their original look.

Where is Abejuela?

Abejuela is about 79 kilometers (49 miles) from Teruel, the capital of its province. It's also about 78 kilometers (48 miles) from Valencia. The town is part of the Gúdar Javalambre region, which is known for its beautiful mountains.

Abejuela has about 8,000 hectares (nearly 20,000 acres) of forests and farmland. These lands are found at different heights, from 800 meters (2,625 feet) to 1,610 meters (5,282 feet) above sea level. The town itself is located at 1,167 meters (3,829 feet) high.

For over 50 years, it was quite hard to get to Abejuela from its own province of Teruel. The only way was by a local road or a long 35-kilometer (22-mile) detour through the province of Valencia.

Abejuela shares its borders with several other towns. To the north, it borders Manzanera. To the south and west, it borders Yesa, Chelva, and Higueruelas. To the east, it borders Andilla and El Toro. Most of these towns are in the Valencia province, except El Toro, which is in Castellón.

La Cervera: A Nearby Hamlet

Within Abejuela's area, there is a small village called La Cervera. A "hamlet" is a very small settlement, often without its own church. Sadly, La Cervera is now completely empty. This is because it doesn't have electricity or running water.

La Cervera is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Abejuela. In the past, it was very important for Abejuela's survival. The weather there was milder, and its lands were used for grazing animals. During snowy times, La Cervera's resources were very helpful for the people of Abejuela.

Fun Feasts and Celebrations!

The people of Abejuela love to celebrate! Here are some of their main feasts:

  • July 20: This is the feast day of Santa Margarita. On this day, people go on a special trip called a pilgrimage to the Santa Margarita hermitage.
  • August 28: This is the feast day of Saint Augustine. He is the patron saint of Abejuela. This date is when the town celebrates its main patron saint's day.

Cool Buildings and Monuments

Abejuela has some interesting old buildings to see:

  • Saint Agustín Parish Church: This church was built in the 20th century in the Baroque style. The Baroque style is known for being very grand and decorative. What's special about this church is its unique ceiling, or "vault." It was built with a single arch design.
  • The Santa Margarita Hermitage: This small church was built a very long time ago, in the 13th century. King James ordered its construction. There are only five buildings in Spain with the same kind of construction as this hermitage.
