Where is the Sierra del Toro?
This mountain range is found at the eastern edge of the Iberian System. It stretches south from the Sierra de Javalambre mountains. The highest point in the Sierra del Toro is Puntal del Agrillar, which stands at 1,616 meters (5,302 feet) tall.
Important Peaks and Features
Besides Puntal del Agrillar, there are several other important peaks:
- Puntal de Magaña (1,614 meters or 5,295 feet)
- Alto del Tomatero (1,607 meters or 5,272 feet)
- Puntal de Peiró (1,605 meters or 5,266 feet)
- Salada (1,581 meters or 5,187 feet) – This peak has a special building for military communications.
Winter Snow and Ice Houses
The tops of these mountains often get covered in snow during winter. They are some of the highest points in the Land of Valencia. Because of the cold, many old ice houses can be found here. These buildings were used long ago to store ice and snow.
Forests and History
Sadly, these mountains have often been damaged by forest fires. This happens during hot and dry summers. To help the area recover, many new trees have been planted.
The Sierra del Toro was also a place of important events during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). During this war, a group called the fascist troops tried to divide the territory controlled by the Spanish Republic government. They wanted to reach the Mediterranean coast. You can still find many old trenches from these battles in the mountains.
