Abidin Dino was a famous Turkish artist. He was born on March 23, 1913, and passed away on December 7, 1993. He was known for his amazing paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Dino also worked in film, caricature, and ceramics, showing his many talents.

Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Abidin Dino was born in Istanbul, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. His family loved art, and he was even named after his grandfather, a diplomat. As a child, he lived in Switzerland and France for several years. He returned to Istanbul in 1925.

Dino started high school at Robert College of Istanbul. But he loved art so much that he left school to focus on painting, drawing, and writing. Soon, his cartoons and articles were published in newspapers.

In 1933, he and five other young artists started a group called the "D Group". They held many art shows. Around this time, Dino also drew pictures for the famous poet Nazım Hikmet's books.

Adventures in Film and Art

In 1933, a Soviet film director invited Dino to work in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Dino accepted with encouragement from Atatürk, Turkey's leader. In Leningrad, he worked on films as a scenery designer and assistant director. He even directed a film called "Miners".

After returning to Turkey, he went to Paris, France, from 1937 to 1939. There, he met famous artists like Picasso. When he came back to Istanbul, he joined the "Harbor Exhibition". This show featured paintings of Istanbul's dockworkers and fishermen.

Dino was also asked to design the Turkish section at the 1939 New York World's Fair. He continued to publish articles and cartoons, exploring new ways to show real life in his art.

Time in Anatolia

During World War II, Abidin Dino created drawings inspired by the conflict. Because of his political art, he and his older brother were sent away from Istanbul in 1941. They went to southeastern Anatolia, a region in Turkey.

Even though it was a difficult time, Dino was very creative during these years until 1945. His wife, Güzin Dino, taught French at a local high school. Abidin worked for a newspaper, drawing and writing about the hard lives of farm workers. He also wrote plays and started making sculptures.

In 1951, he was allowed to leave Turkey. He first went to Rome, Italy, and then settled in Paris, France, in 1952.

Life in Paris

In Paris, the home of Abidin and Güzin Dino became a meeting place for many famous artists and writers. They often hosted friends from Turkey, like Nazım Hikmet and Yaşar Kemal. The Dinos also helped young Turkish artists and students in Paris. They introduced them to famous masters and helped them get started.

For eight years, starting in 1954, Abidin Dino showed his art at the "Salon de Mai" exhibitions in Paris. Meanwhile, Güzin Dino worked for Radio France and taught Turkish at the Sorbonne. She also translated Turkish books into French.

Abidin Dino passed away in Paris on December 7, 1993, at the age of 80. His body was brought back to Istanbul and buried in the Aşiyan Cemetery.
