Abram Calvin Wildrick (born August 5, 1836 – died November 16, 1894) was an officer in the United States Army. He served with the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, in 1866, he was given the honorary rank of brevet brigadier general of volunteers. This rank was effective from April 2, 1865.

Early Life and Education

Abram Calvin Wildrick was born in Blairstown, New Jersey, on August 5, 1836. His father, Isaac Wildrick, had served as a U.S. Representative for New Jersey. Abram Wildrick studied at the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point. He graduated from West Point on July 1, 1857.

Military Career

Starting His Army Journey

Wildrick began his army career as a brevet second lieutenant on July 1, 1857. He became a full second lieutenant on October 5, 1857. On April 27, 1861, he was promoted to first lieutenant. For a short time in 1861, he worked as an assistant adjutant general. Then, on September 13, 1861, he became an assistant quartermaster for the District of Oregon. He was promoted to captain in the Regular Army on February 8, 1864.

Service During the Civil War

On October 11, 1864, Wildrick was made a colonel of the 39th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This regiment had just been formed. Wildrick's regiment took part in the Siege of Petersburg, a very important battle. They also fought in the Third Battle of Petersburg on April 2, 1865.

For his brave service at Petersburg, Wildrick received honorary promotions. He was made a brevet major and lieutenant colonel in the regular army. He also became a brevet brigadier general of volunteers. He left the volunteer service on June 17, 1865.

Post-War Recognition

On January 13, 1866, President Andrew Johnson officially nominated Wildrick for the honorary rank of brevet brigadier general of volunteers. This rank was set to begin from August 2, 1865. The United States Senate confirmed this appointment on March 12, 1866.

Later Army Service and Retirement

Wildrick continued to serve in the regular army. He was promoted to major on November 3, 1882. Later, on July 1, 1892, he became a lieutenant colonel. He officially retired from the army on October 10, 1894.

Death and Burial

Abram Calvin Wildrick passed away at Fort Wadsworth, New York, on November 16, 1894. He was buried at West Point National Cemetery. This cemetery is located on the grounds of the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.
