Acme (pronounced ACK-mee) is a small community in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Acme Township.
Acme is located right on the eastern side of the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay. This bay is a part of Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes! Acme is also close to Traverse City, a bigger city nearby. A famous place in Acme is the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.

What is the History of Acme?
Acme was started by a man named L. S. Hoxie in 1864. He came from New York and bought land here. Then, he planned out the community. This process is called platting.
When Was Acme's Post Office Established?
Acme got its first post office in 1869. L.S. Hoxie's son, Alburtus T. Hoxie, became the first postmaster. Before 1869, the post office was called "Whitewater." The name "Acme" comes from a Greek word meaning "summit" or "highest point."
How Did Railways Impact Acme?
In 1892, a railway line was built through Acme. This line connected Traverse City to Petoskey. It helped people and goods travel more easily.
When Did Acme's Tallest Building Open?
Acme's post office closed for a while in 1933 but reopened in 1952. Later, in 1986, the tallest building in Grand Traverse County opened in Acme. This was the tower at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.
Where is Acme Located?
Acme is in the northern part of Michigan. It's specifically in the southwestern part of Acme Township. This area is in the northeastern part of Grand Traverse County.
What Waterways are Near Acme?
The community sits on the eastern shore of the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay. This bay is connected to Lake Michigan. A creek named Acme Creek also flows into the bay right at the community.
What Major Roads Go Through Acme?
Two important highways pass through Acme:
- US 31: This highway runs north and south through Acme. If you go south, it leads to Traverse City. Going north, US 31 takes you to towns like Elk Rapids and Petoskey. It eventually reaches the Mackinac Bridge.
- M-72: This highway crosses US 31 in the middle of Acme. To the west, it joins US 31 and goes to Traverse City. To the east, M-72 goes through Williamsburg and towards Kalkaska.
What Schools are in Acme?
Students in Acme attend schools in the Traverse City Area Public Schools district. The closest public high school for older students is Traverse City Central High School. There was an elementary school in Acme called Bertha Vos Elementary School, but it closed in 2008.
