Discovering Acres Green's Past
The Acres Green neighborhood started being built in 1971. It was developed by Morris General contractors. Before that, the land was a pasture south of County Line Road. It was also close to Interstate 25.
This was the very first housing area in northern Douglas County. The last part of the neighborhood was finished 12 years later.
Growth During Denver's Boom
Acres Green grew as Denver became very successful. This was due to a big boom in the energy industry. Even though Acres Green is about 20 miles (32 km) from downtown Denver, jobs were growing closer. The Denver Technological Center was expanding nearby. Also, the Inverness office complex was just starting up.
By the late 1970s, Acres Green had its own park, an elementary school, and a library.
Changes and New Roads
As Denver kept growing south along the I-25 highway, more homes were needed. But the area around Acres Green stayed pretty quiet for many years. The closest new buildings were over 2 miles (3.2 km) north. This changed in the early 1980s when development reached County Line Road.
Most of Acres Green was already finished when the Highlands Ranch community began. That community, to the west, didn't reach Acres Green until the early 1990s. In the mid-1980s, the SH 470 highway was built. It went right between the homes of Acres Green and County Line Road. Sadly, the library built in 1979 had to be taken down because it was in the highway's path.
New Growth in the 1990s
In the mid-1990s, Denver had another big economic boom. This time, it was because of the technology industry. As the years went on, the empty land around Acres Green started to fill up. The Meridian office complex was built to the southeast.
Also, the Park Meadows shopping mall opened. This led to many large stores being built nearby. Many other neighborhoods were built south of Acres Green. These new areas became known as Lone Tree.
Acres Green Today
Today, Acres Green is a well-established neighborhood. It's in a great spot for people who work in southeast Denver. In 1995, the city of Lone Tree became an official city. It almost completely surrounded Acres Green.
However, the homeowners in Acres Green decided not to join Lone Tree. So, Acres Green is still an unincorporated area of Douglas County. This means it's managed by the county, not by a city government.
Acres Green's Size
The Acres Green CDP covers an area of about 1.557 square kilometers (0.60 square miles). All of this area is land.
