Club Career
Starting at Partizan
Adem Ljajić was born in Novi Pazar, Serbia. He joined Partizan when he was 14 years old in 2005. He was the first player to wear the number 22 jersey for Partizan after a famous player named Saša Ilić left the club.
Ljajić played his first game for Partizan in the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League qualifiers in July 2008. He scored his first goal for Partizan in a league match in November 2008.
In 2008, the famous English club Manchester United gave Ljajić a trial. In January 2009, Manchester United announced they would sign Ljajić and his teammate Zoran Tošić. Tošić joined right away, but Ljajić was supposed to stay at Partizan until January 2010.
Even though he couldn't officially join until 2010, Ljajić often visited Manchester to train with the United team. This allowed the coaches to see how he was doing. However, Manchester United decided not to sign Ljajić. This was because of problems with getting him a work permit. Partizan's director said he thought Manchester United would regret this choice later.
Playing for Fiorentina
On 13 January 2010, Ljajić signed with the Italian club Fiorentina. He signed a five-year contract. Partizan received about €8 million for him. Ljajić played his first game for Fiorentina on 31 January 2010. He came on as a substitute in a 2–2 draw against Cagliari. His first few months were spent getting used to his new team.
When his fellow countryman Siniša Mihajlović became the coach, Ljajić got more chances to play. He scored his first goal for Fiorentina from a penalty kick on 18 September 2010. This was in a game against Lazio, which Fiorentina lost 1–2.
In May 2012, something unusual happened during a match against Novara. Ljajić was taken out of the game. He reacted by clapping at his coach, Delio Rossi, in a way that seemed sarcastic. The coach then grabbed and tried to punch Ljajić. After the game, Fiorentina announced that Rossi was no longer the coach. Ljajić's teammate said that no one heard Ljajić insult the coach.
Ljajić scored two goals in one game when Fiorentina beat Internazionale 4–1 on 17 February 2013.
Time at Roma
Ljajić joined Roma on 28 August 2013. Roma paid €11 million for him. He signed a four-year contract and chose the number 8 jersey. On 1 September 2013, Ljajić played his first game for Roma. He scored the last goal in a 3–0 win against Hellas Verona. In his first year in Rome, Ljajić scored 6 goals in 32 games.
In the 2014–15 season, Ljajić played his first game on 30 August 2014. Roma won 2–0 against Fiorentina. On 24 September, he scored his first goal of the season. This was in a 2–1 win over Parma. On 6 December, he scored two goals in a game for Roma for the first time. This helped Roma draw 2–2 against Sassuolo. He also scored his first goal in the UEFA Europa League on 26 February 2015. He finished the season with 9 goals in 41 games. He was the team's second-highest goal scorer that season.
Loan to Inter Milan
On 31 August 2015, Ljajić went on loan to Inter Milan for one season. Inter paid Roma €1.75 million for this loan. They also had the option to buy him permanently later. On 1 December 2015, Ljajić scored his first goal for Inter. This was in a 2–1 loss to Napoli.
Moving to Torino
Inter Milan decided not to buy Ljajić permanently. So, on 18 July 2016, Ljajić was sold to Torino for €8.5 million.
Playing for Beşiktaş
On 31 August 2018, Ljajić joined the Turkish club Beşiktaş on a one-season loan. On 29 May 2019, Beşiktaş signed Ljajić permanently for €6.5 million.
Fatih Karagümrük
On 28 September 2022, Ljajić signed a contract with Fatih Karagümrük. He started playing for the team in official matches from January 2023.
Return to Novi Pazar
On 14 September 2023, Ljajić returned to his hometown and signed with Novi Pazar. He even asked to play for the club without a salary. Three days later, he scored the winning goal in his first game. This was a 2–1 win over Napredak. He came into the game as a substitute in the 58th minute.
International Career
Ljajić played for the Serbian under-17 and under-19 teams. He made his debut for the under-21 team in September 2008. In October 2010, Serbia's coach announced that Ljajić would play for the senior national team for the first time. This was for a friendly match against Bulgaria in November 2010.
In May 2012, Ljajić was not included in the national team by coach Siniša Mihajlović. This was because of a disagreement about singing the Serbian national anthem. Ljajić had signed an agreement that included singing the anthem. He later said he loved Serbia and wanted to play for the team, but he also had to respect himself.
In February 2014, the new coach, Ljubinko Drulović, said players would not have to sing the anthem. He only asked them to give their best on the field. Ljajić scored his first goal for the senior team on 7 June 2015. This was in a 4–1 friendly win against Azerbaijan.
In June 2018, Ljajić was chosen for the 23-player Serbian team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He played in all three group matches. Serbia was eliminated during the group stage.
