How Adna Got Its Name
The town of Adna has an interesting story behind its name. An early resident, J.G. Browning, first called the area "Willoway." This name came from his wife Edna's favorite saying: "Where there's a will, there's a way."
In 1892, the railroad changed the name to Pamona. This was to avoid confusion with another town called Willapa. However, there was already a Pomona, Washington in the state. So, the town needed a new name again.
There are two main stories about how "Adna" was chosen. One story says the name was meant to be "Edna," after Edna Browning. But because another post office named Edna already existed, the first letter was changed to "A." Another story says a railway superintendent renamed the town in 1894. He supposedly named it after a family member, Adna Marian.
A Look at Adna's Past
Adna has experienced some big events in its history. In 2007, a very strong storm called the Great Coastal Gale of 2007 caused major flooding. Downtown Adna was covered in about 4.5 feet (1.4 meters) of water. During this time, the high school's batting cages were used as a place to organize help for the community.
Where is Adna Located?
Adna is situated right next to the Chehalis River. It is about 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) southwest of the city of Chehalis. The small town of Littell is just 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) to the east. A main road, Washington State Route 6, runs right through Adna.
Parks and Fun Things to Do
Adna has a couple of nice parks for residents and visitors.
Back Memorial County Park
This park is next to Adna High School. The Back family donated the land in 1978. The park is about 5 acres (2 hectares) in size. It has hosted softball tournaments that raise money for scholarships. These scholarships honor a local coach. In the early 1980s, the high school football team even used the park temporarily while their stadium was being rebuilt. Today, it has ballfields and a small running track.
Rose County Park
Southeast of Adna is Rose County Park, often called Rose Park by locals. This park is much larger, at 21 acres (8.5 hectares). It offers picnic areas and playgrounds for kids. There is also a 0.4-mile (0.64-kilometer) hiking path. This path is set up as a fitness trail, with different exercise stations. Both Back Memorial and Rose parks are managed by the Lewis County Parks and Recreation Department. The local Lions Club helps maintain Back Memorial Park.
Willapa Hills Trail
Adna is also a starting point for the Willapa Hills Trail. This trail is great for walking, running, or biking. There is a paved parking lot and a trailhead in Adna where you can access it.
