The Adrar des Ifoghas is a large area of high land made of sandstone rocks. It's located in the Kidal Region of Mali. This area is huge, covering about 250,000 square kilometers.

You'll find wide, flat valleys and lots of granite rocks here. The Adrar des Ifoghas is surrounded by other interesting places. To its east is the Tamesna Plain. The Telemsi Fosse is to the west. South of it lies the lower part of the Azaouak Valley. And to the north is a vast area called Tanezrouft. Several cities are located within or near this region, including Kidal, Aguel'hoc, Boughessa, Essouk, and Tessalit.

What's in a Name?

The local people call the Adrar des Ifoghas "Adagh." The word "Adrar" comes from the Berber language and means "mountain." "Ifogha" is the short name for a powerful and wealthy Tuareg family. This family, known as the "Kel Ifoghas," has been very important in this region for a long time. They are nomads, meaning they move from place to place. They raise and sell animals like camels, goats, and sheep.

Ancient Discoveries

The Adrar des Ifoghas is home to many old archaeological sites. These places tell us about people who lived here long ago.

Rock Art

One of the most important finds is the rock drawings. These drawings show ancient people hunting animals, farming the land, and looking after cows. They give us a peek into their daily lives.

Asselar Man

The bones of a very old human, known as Asselar Man, were also found here. A scientist named Théodore Monod discovered these bones. This find helped us learn more about early humans in Africa.

Modern Day

Today, the Adrar des Ifoghas has become a popular spot for hiking. People enjoy exploring its unique landscapes and ancient history.
