Adrian Sebastian Fleming (born December 6, 1872 – died December 1, 1940) was an important officer in the United States Army. He served in two major wars: the Philippine–American War and World War I. He earned many awards for his bravery and leadership, including the Distinguished Service Medal.

Biography

Early Life and Education

Adrian Sebastian Fleming was born on December 6, 1872. His hometown was Midway, Kentucky. His family had Scottish roots. They came to America in the mid-1700s. His ancestors even fought for the United States during the American Revolutionary War.

Fleming went to the United States Military Academy. This famous school is often called West Point. He graduated in 1895. After graduating, he became an officer in the Fifth Artillery unit.

Military Service Begins

In 1898, Fleming traveled to the Philippines. He was serving with the Sixth Artillery. During his time there, he showed great courage. He was awarded two Silver Stars. He also got injured while serving.

After his time in the Philippines, Fleming worked on recruiting new soldiers. This was in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1901, he was promoted to captain. He then moved to California.

In 1905, Fleming studied at the School of Submarine Defense. This school was located at Fort Totten. After his training, he took charge of the 15th Field Artillery Battery. Later, from September 1917 to May 1918, he was in charge of the Artillery School.

World War I Service

On April 12, 1918, Fleming received a big promotion. He became a brigadier general. He then took command of the 158th Field Artillery Brigade. This unit was at Camp Sherman, Ohio. Later that year, he led his brigade to France. This was during World War I.

General Fleming and his troops fought bravely. They took part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. This was a very important battle. For his excellent work, he received the Distinguished Service Medal. He also earned two oak leaf clusters and the Legion of Honour. The Legion of Honour is a special award from France.

In October 1918, Fleming briefly led the artillery for the 32nd Infantry Division. After that, he returned to command his own brigade. His brigade helped the 17th French Army. This was during the Battle of Verdun. After rejoining the 32nd Infantry Division, they helped occupy Germany. This lasted until July 1919.

Later Career and Retirement

After returning to the United States, Fleming's rank changed. He went back to his permanent rank of colonel. During this time, he studied at the United States Army War College. This is a school for high-ranking officers.

Starting in August 1920, he worked briefly for the General Staff Corps. This was in Washington, D.C.. Due to a physical disability, Fleming retired from the army. This happened on June 17, 1921. He retired as a colonel. However, in 1930, Congress gave him back his brigadier general rank.

During his retirement, Fleming lived in Portland, Oregon. He also worked as a vice president for several paper mill companies. He passed away on December 1, 1940, in Oregon.

Personal life

Adrian Fleming married Mabel V. Gassen. Their wedding was on June 17, 1902. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.
