About Adriana de Barros
Early Life and Interests
Adriana de Barros was born in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. When she was three years old, her family moved to Toronto, Canada. As a child, she mostly enjoyed sports. It wasn't until she was twelve that she discovered her love for drawing. When she was fifteen, her family moved back to Portugal. This move brought new challenges for Adriana with her education and lifestyle.
Education and Career Path
In high school, Adriana chose to study art and design. She later decided to study cinema in college. However, she felt that the film schools and industry in Portugal were not what she hoped for. She believes Toronto would have been a better place to study filmmaking. She still hopes to study filmmaking in North America one day. After high school, she started working for her family's clothing business. This led to a full-time job as a fashion and advertising designer. She also helped run a copy center that had a design section.
Finding Her Place Online
In 1999, Adriana began learning web design and programming. She felt she finally found her true calling online. She could combine many different art forms into each project. The internet allowed her to create English language projects easily, without being limited by location. She started by making Flash visual poems. Later, she founded Scene 360, her online film and arts magazine. There, she writes about film and art, and features creative people.
Adriana is self taught and does not have a formal degree. Today, she still runs her copy center and designs in her studio. She is the main creative director of Breathewords.com. Her work includes many types of media. She creates hand-painted magazine covers, e-commerce websites, and fun Flash sites for poets.

Illustration Style and Inspiration
Adriana's art often explores everyday life, human feelings, and colors. She also creates imaginary and surrealist scenes. She enjoys painting portraits of people with unique facial expressions. You might often see hands, angel wings, butterflies, and animals in her artwork.
A special part of Adriana's style is that she sometimes leaves parts of her art unfinished. This gives her pieces a unique look. She loves mixing old styles with modern life. She gets ideas from the Golden Age of Cinema and the Renaissance. For example, she is inspired by the unfinished sketches of Leonardo da Vinci. She also adds a Pop Art touch to her work. This includes paintings of kids in animal masks, Disney characters, and tattoo-like outlines with bright backgrounds. Her creative process often starts with writing, inspired by a theme, song, or daily life. Then, she turns these ideas into a visual piece.
Adriana uses acrylic paints. She also uses mixed media with watercolor, color pencils, spray paint, and collage in her paintings.
