Ahmaad Smith (born February 28, 1983) is an American football coach and former player. He used to play as a defensive back. Currently, he works as a quality control coordinator for Rice University. He has held this coaching job since 2024.

Before becoming a coach, Ahmaad played college football at Tennessee State University. He also played for several professional teams. These included the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena Football League (AFL). He was also part of teams like the Mississippi MudCats and the BC Lions. You might even remember him from Michael Irvin's TV show 4th and Long!

Early Football Days

Ahmaad Smith grew up playing sports. In high school, he mostly played basketball. He didn't start playing football until his very last year of high school.

College Sports Career

Ahmaad went to Tennessee State University. He was a dedicated athlete there from 2002 to 2005. He played both football and basketball for the Tennessee State Tigers.

In football, he was a starter for two years. He was even chosen as a defensive captain in his senior year, 2005. He finished college in 2006 with a degree in business information systems.

Playing Professional Football

After college, Ahmaad played for several professional football teams. He started with the Mississippi MudCats in 2007. He showed off his skills by getting four interceptions in just six games.

Later in 2007, he played for the Texas Copperheads. He then joined Team Tennessee in 2008, but that league didn't end up playing. Ahmaad also tried out for teams in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He signed with the BC Lions in 2008 and the Toronto Argonauts in 2010.

He also played in the Arena Football League (AFL). He was with the Iowa Barnstormers in 2010. After that, he joined the Pittsburgh Power in 2011.

Coaching Football Teams

Ahmaad Smith started his coaching career in 2012. He became the defensive backs coach for the Hampden–Sydney Tigers. He was even a finalist for a special coaching award in 2013!

In 2015, he got a cool opportunity. He worked as a coaching intern for the Tennessee Titans in the National Football League (NFL). He helped coach their defensive backs. He also coached high school football at Northview High School.

From 2015 to 2017, he coached defensive backs for the Catawba Indians. He returned to his old college, Tennessee State University, in 2018. There, he coached defensive backs and helped with the passing game. He also had coaching internships with the Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals.

More recently, he coached at Dartmouth College in 2021 and 2022. Since 2023, he has been coaching at Rice University. He is currently the quality control coordinator for the Rice Owls football team.

About Ahmaad's Family

Football runs in Ahmaad's family! His dad, John Henry Smith, also played football for the Tennessee State Tigers. He was even drafted by the Cleveland Browns. A famous NFL player, Richard Dent, is Ahmaad's godfather.
