Ajaccio (pronounced "ah-YAH-cho") is an important town in France. It is the main city, or capital, of Corsica, which is a special region of France. Ajaccio is also the "prefecture" of the Corse-du-Sud department. A prefecture is like the administrative center for a region.
Geography of Ajaccio
Ajaccio is located on the west coast of the island of Corsica. It sits in a protected area at the base of wooded hills, right on the northern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio. The harbour is on the east side of the town and is naturally protected by a peninsula to the south.
Ajaccio has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has very warm and dry summers, and mild, wet winters. It's a type of climate often found around the Mediterranean Sea.

Ajaccio is famous for being the birthplace of several notable people, including:
