Aladár Gerevich (born March 16, 1910 – died May 14, 1991) was a famous fencer from Hungary. Many people think he was the best Olympic swordsman ever! He won an amazing seven gold medals in sabre fencing. He achieved these wins across six different Olympic Games.

A True Olympic Legend

Aladár Gerevich holds a special place in Olympic history. He is one of only two athletes to win the same event six times. This is even more amazing because two Olympic Games were cancelled due to World War II.

His first gold medal was in 1932. His last gold medal was in 1960. That's an incredible 28 years between his first and last Olympic wins! This record for the longest time between Olympic medals was later tied by equestrian Mark Todd. It was then beaten by Isabell Werth in dressage.

A Family of Fencers

Fencing was a family affair for Aladár Gerevich. His wife, Erna Bogen, was also a fencer. She won an Olympic medal too! His son, Pál Gerevich, also won Olympic medals in fencing. Even his father-in-law, Albert Bogen, won a silver medal in team sabre at the 1912 Olympics. Imagine all that fencing talent in one family!

Proving Them Wrong

Before the 1960 Rome Olympics, some people thought Aladár was too old to compete. He was told by the fencing committee that he shouldn't go. But Aladár didn't let that stop him. He challenged the entire Hungarian sabre team to individual matches. Guess what? He won every single one!

He proved he was still a top fencer. He went to the 1960 Olympics and won another gold medal with his team. He just barely missed out on an individual gold medal by one touch.

Life After the Olympics

After he stopped competing, Aladár Gerevich became a fencing coach. He taught at the Vasas Sports Club in Budapest. He passed away at the age of 81.

To honor his amazing achievements, an asteroid was named after him. Asteroid 228893 Gerevich was discovered in 2003. It's a cool way to remember such a great athlete!
