History of Alaiedon Township
The land that became Alaiedon Township was first mapped in 1827. The first person to settle here was James Phillips in December 1836. This area was also called German Settlement.
How the Township Was Formed
In 1837, a settlement called Jefferson City was planned. It was located near Mud Creek. The township was officially created in 1842. Henry Schoolcraft gave it its name. He said "Alaiedon" meant "hill land for excellent living."
When it was first formed, the township was much larger. It included areas that are now Lansing, Meridian, and Delhi townships. These areas later became their own townships in 1842. This gave Alaiedon Township its current size.
Changes Over Time
In 1847, the state capital moved to Lansing. Around this time, people realized that Jefferson City was never officially planned. This meant people couldn't legally own their land there. So, the settlement was abandoned.
In 1877, residents built a township hall. This building served the community until 1959. A new township hall was then built on West Holt Road.
In recent years, the township has made special agreements. These agreements, called PA 425 Agreements, allowed parts of the township to be used by the city of Lansing. This helped a large company, Jackson National Life Insurance, grow its headquarters.
