Early Life and College Football

Alan-Michael Cash was born in Henrico County, Virginia, on August 20, 1987. He attended Varina High School in Henrico, Virginia.

He started playing college football for the NC State Wolfpack in 2005. He was a "redshirt" player that year, meaning he practiced but did not play in games. This allowed him to gain experience without using up a year of his playing eligibility.

From 2006 to 2009, Cash was a four-year letterman. This means he played well enough to earn a special award for his sport. In 2006, his first year playing, he made eight tackles. In 2007, he had 48 tackles, including 3.5 sacks, and caught one interception. A sack is when a defensive player tackles the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage.

In 2008, he made 38 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He also forced one fumble and broke up two passes. In his senior year in 2009, he had 55 tackles and two sacks. He also forced another fumble.
