Playing for Football Clubs
Alberico Evani was born in Massa, Italy. He played 353 games in Italy's top league, Serie A, scoring 16 goals. He started in the AC Milan youth academy.
Evani became a quick left-sided midfielder. He was known for his good technique. Even if he wasn't the fastest, his steady play and hard work were very important. He played a key role for AC Milan, especially under coaches Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello.
He made his first team debut at 18 in 1981. Evani played for AC Milan for 13 years. During this time, he won many awards. These included:
- Two promotions from Serie B (Italy's second division)
- Three Serie A titles
- Two European Cups (Europe's top club competition)
- Two Italian Super Cups
- Two European Super Cups
- Two Intercontinental Cups
In the 1989 Intercontinental Cup, he scored the winning goal against Atlético Nacional. He was named "Man of the Match" for his great performance.
In 1993, Evani left Milan to join Sampdoria. He won the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) with them in 1994. He stayed there for four years. After Sampdoria, he played for Reggiana in 1997. He finished his playing career at Carrarese in 1998.
Playing for Italy
Evani played for the Italy under-21 and under-23 teams. He played in the 1988 Olympics, where Italy finished fourth.
When Arrigo Sacchi became the coach of the Italian national team, Evani became a regular player. He played 15 games for Italy in total. His first game for Italy was on 21 December 1991, a 2–0 win against Cyprus.
He played for Italy in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He played in Italy's first game, a loss to Ireland. In the final against Brazil, he scored a penalty kick in the shootout. However, Italy lost the game.
How He Played Football
Alberico Evani was a very smart and skilled player. He was a winger, playing on the left side of the field. He wasn't known for being super fast or doing fancy tricks. Instead, he was known for his speed, discipline, and reliable play. These qualities were very important for AC Milan's success in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He had good technique and could pass the ball well. He was also good at crossing the ball into the penalty area. He often made attacking runs down the left side of the field. Because he was tactically smart and could play in different positions, he was also able to play as a full-back. This is a defensive player who also runs forward.
Later in his career, he sometimes played as a central midfielder. This was because he was good at starting attacks with his passing. Evani was also good at taking free kicks and had a powerful shot. His nickname was "Bubu," because people thought he looked like Boo-Boo Bear from the Yogi Bear cartoons.
Coaching Career
After he stopped playing, Evani returned to AC Milan. He became a youth team coach for players aged 16-17. His team won the national championship in 2007.
In 2009, he became the head coach of a club called San Marino Calcio. He left the team in 2010.
In August 2010, Evani was named the head coach of the Italy U18 team. On 6 August 2013, he became the coach of the Italy U20 team.
In February 2018, Evani was a temporary coach for the Italy U21 team. This was for friendly matches against Norway and Serbia. Later that month, he became an assistant coach for the senior Italy national team under Roberto Mancini.
In November 2020, when coach Mancini was sick, Evani stepped in as manager. He led Italy to a 4–0 win against Estonia. He also managed two 2020–21 UEFA Nations League A matches against Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
