Time at AC Milan
Evani made his first team debut for AC Milan in 1981 when he was 18. He played for the club for 13 years. He was known for his hard work and ability to play in different positions on the left side of the field. These qualities were very important for AC Milan, especially under coaches Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello.
During his time at Milan, Evani helped the team win many titles. These included:
- Two promotions from Serie B
- Three Serie A titles
- Two European Cups
- Two Italian Super Cups
- Two European Super Cups
- Two Intercontinental Cups
In the 1989 Intercontinental Cup, he scored the winning goal against Atlético Nacional. He was also named "Man of the Match" for his great performance.
Moving to Other Clubs
After leaving Milan in 1993, Evani joined Sampdoria. There, he won the Coppa Italia in 1994. He stayed with Sampdoria for four years. Later, he moved to Reggiana in 1997, which was a Serie B team. He finished his playing career at Carrarese in 1998, playing in Serie C1.
International Football: Playing for Italy
Evani played for the Italy under-21 team and the Italy under-23 team. He played in the 1988 Olympics, where Italy reached the semi-finals and finished fourth.
When Arrigo Sacchi became the coach of the Italian national team, Evani became a regular player. He played 15 matches for Italy in total. His first game for Italy was on December 21, 1991, in a 2–0 win against Cyprus.
He also represented Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He played in Italy's first game, a loss to Ireland. In the final against Brazil, he scored a penalty kick in the shootout, but Italy lost the match.
Evani's Playing Style
Alberico Evani was a dynamic and skilled left-sided midfielder. Even though he wasn't the fastest, his speed, discipline, and reliable qualities were key to AC Milan's success. He was good at passing, crossing the ball, and making attacking runs down the left side.
Evani was also very smart tactically and could play in different positions. He was professional and had great stamina. He could defend well and cover for his teammates who were attacking. Earlier in his career, he often played as a full-back. Later, he even played as a central midfielder because of his good passing skills. Evani was also good at free kicks and had a powerful shot. His nickname was "Bubu" because people thought he looked like Boo-Boo Bear from the Yogi Bear cartoons.
Managerial Career: Coaching Teams
After he stopped playing, Evani returned to AC Milan. He became a youth team coach for the "Allievi Nazionali" (players aged 16-17). His team won the national championship in 2007.
In June 2009, he became the head coach of Lega Pro Seconda Divisione club San Marino Calcio. He was removed from his job in April 2010, even though his team was in second place. This was due to problems within the team and with the club's management.
In August 2010, Evani was appointed head coach of the Italy U18 team. On August 6, 2013, he became the coach of the Italy U20 team.
Coaching for the Italian National Team
On February 6, 2018, Evani was a temporary manager for the Italy U21 team for friendly matches. This happened while Luigi Di Biagio was temporarily managing the senior Italian national team. Later that month, Roberto Mancini, the senior team coach, named Evani as an assistant coach.
In November 2020, when Mancini tested positive for COVID-19, Evani stepped in as manager. He led the team to a 4–0 win against Estonia. He also managed the final two 2020–21 UEFA Nations League A matches against Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Recent Coaching Role
On April 7, 2025, Evani was hired as the new head coach of Serie B club Sampdoria. He returned to the club with the goal of saving them from being relegated to a lower league. He worked with Mancini's former coaching staff. Evani successfully helped Sampdoria avoid relegation by winning a playoff match. However, he was not kept on as coach and left the club at the end of the 2025 season.
