Albert Mountain is a cool mountain located in North Carolina. It's part of the Appalachian Mountains, a famous mountain range. The mountain stands about 5,200 feet (1,585 meters) tall. A special path called the Appalachian Trail goes right over its top. From the summit, you can see amazing views from a fire tower. You can spot the Blue Ridge Mountains and the beautiful Little Tennessee River valley.

Why is it Called Albert Mountain?

Albert Mountain got its name from a local person named Albert Siler. He lived from 1829 to 1904. Other places nearby are also named after his family. For example, Siler Bald is named after Albert's father, William Siler. Rufus Morgan Falls is named after Albert's grandson, Rufus Morgan.

Where is Albert Mountain Located?

Albert Mountain is found inside the Nantahala National Forest in Macon County. This forest is a protected area. The mountain is about 5,200 feet (1,585 meters) high.

  • Standing Indian Mountain is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south of Albert Mountain.
  • The town of Franklin is about 10 miles (16 km) northeast.

The Fire Tower on Albert Mountain

For many years, people have watched for fires from Albert Mountain. A small log cabin was used as a lookout as early as 1942. In 1951, a tall steel tower was built. This new tower replaced older lookout spots. It helps spot fires for the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory.

What Can You See From the Tower?

The steel tower is 55 feet (17 meters) tall. From the top, you get incredible views! You can see the Nantahala Mountains and the Little Tennessee River valley. Even the Great Smoky Mountains and the Great Balsam Mountains are visible on a clear day.

Hiking Albert Mountain

If you love hiking, Albert Mountain is a great spot! The famous Appalachian Trail goes right over the summit. The 100-mile mark of this long trail is at the very top of the mountain.

  • A popular way to hike to the summit is from Bearpen Gap.
  • From there, it's about a 0.5-mile (0.8 km) walk up to the top.
