Alexander Nikitich Darchiev (born 14 May 1960) is a Russian diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. He has been the Russian Ambassador to the United States since March 2025. Before this, he served as the Russian Ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021.

Alexander Darchiev's Early Life and Education
Alexander Darchiev was born on 14 May 1960 in Hungary. His father was also a diplomat. He went to Moscow State University and studied history, graduating in 1983. During his studies, he became fluent in both English and French. In the 1980s, he was a researcher at the Institute for U.S. and Canadian Studies, which is part of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Joining the Foreign Ministry
In 1992, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Alexander Darchiev joined the Russian Foreign Ministry. This is the government department that handles a country's relationships with other nations. He spent his entire career working in the North America Department of the Ministry.
Key Roles in Diplomacy
In the mid-1990s, he became the head of a section within the North American Department. Later, he worked as an advisor at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. In 2003, he was promoted to deputy director of the North American Department. From 2005 to 2010, he was the deputy chief of mission at the Russian Embassy in the U.S. This role means he was the second-in-command at the embassy.
Ambassador to Canada
Alexander Darchiev served as the Russian Ambassador to Canada from 24 October 2014 to 11 January 2021. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat representing their country in another nation. Since 2016, he has held the high rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in the Russian civil service. After his time as ambassador to Canada, he became the Director of the North American Department.

In October 2024, the previous ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, completed his duties. In November 2024, it was reported that Alexander Darchiev was chosen for the role, though it was not yet official.

On 27 February 2025, Alexander Darchiev led the Russian team in important talks with the United States. These discussions happened in Istanbul, Turkey, and were a follow-up to earlier meetings in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The main goal was to improve Russia–United States relations. They also talked about removing restrictions on their embassies. During this meeting, the U.S. team officially accepted Darchiev's appointment as the new Russian Ambassador to the United States.
Official Appointment
On 28 February 2025, it was announced that Alexander Darchiev had been officially appointed as ambassador, and the U.S. government had accepted this. President Vladimir Putin formally appointed him on March 6, 2025, through a special order (decree № 121).
