History of Alexandria
Alexandria was started in the 1830s. It was named after John Alexander, who owned a ferry (a boat that carries people and cars across a river) nearby. A post office has been open in Alexandria since 1840.
Geography and Location
Alexandria is in the northeast part of Clark County, right next to the famous Mississippi River. Main roads like US Route 61 and US Route 136 pass through the city.
Nearby towns include Wayland, which is about seven miles west on Route 136. Keokuk, Iowa is five miles northeast on Route 136. Across the Mississippi River, about 1.5 miles east, is Warsaw, Illinois.
The city covers a total area of about 0.39 square miles (1.01 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
Because Alexandria is located along the Mississippi River, it can experience flooding. A big flood happened in 1993, when large parts of the area were covered by water.
