What is the Algeciras Bay Area Like?
This area is made up of several towns that are very close together. They are used for homes and businesses. These towns are found along the coast of the Bay of Algeciras and nearby.
Main Towns in the Urban Area
The main towns in this busy urban area are Algeciras, Los Barrios, San Roque, and La Línea de la Concepción. Even though it's not officially part of Spain, Gibraltar is also very close. It's a British territory right next to La Línea. Gibraltar's population is also part of this connected urban space.
Beyond the Main Urban Area
About 90% of the people in the Algeciras Bay area live in these main urban towns. But there are also other towns a bit further away.
- First group: These towns are about 10 to 20 kilometers from the Bay. They include Tarifa, Castellar de la Frontera, San Martín del Tesorillo, the Guadiaro Valley, and the Secadero neighborhood. The Secadero neighborhood is part of the town of Casares.
- Second group: These towns are more than 20 kilometers from the Bay. The most notable ones are Jimena de la Frontera and the smaller towns of Facinas and Tahivilla. These last two belong to the municipality of Tarifa.
Sometimes, people also include Gibraltar and even Ceuta when talking about this metropolitan area. This is because these cities, especially Gibraltar, have a big impact on the local economy and society. If Gibraltar and Ceuta are included, the total population would be around 375,546 people. This makes it one of the largest metropolitan areas in Andalusia.
