Algernon Emory Smith was an American soldier. He was an officer in the 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. He died during the famous Battle of the Little Bighorn. This battle took place in what is now Montana Territory. Smith was born on September 17, 1842, and passed away on June 25, 1876.

Algernon Smith's Early Life and Military Service

Algernon Smith was born in New York State in 1842. He went to Hamilton College there. In June 1862, Smith joined the army. This was during the American Civil War.

Fighting in the Civil War

Smith first joined the 7th U.S. Infantry Regiment. He later became a lieutenant in the 117th New York Volunteer Infantry. In October 1863, he became an aide to Major General Alfred Terry. Smith was badly hurt in January 1865 at Fort Fisher. Because of his brave actions, he was later given the honorary rank of major.

Joining the 7th Cavalry

After the Civil War ended, Smith joined the 7th U.S. Cavalry. This was in 1867. The famous General George Armstrong Custer led this unit. Smith quickly became good friends with Custer. He was part of Custer's close group of friends and family. Custer even had a nickname for him: "Fresh" Smith. In October 1867, Smith married Nettie B. Bowen.

Campaigns with Custer

Smith took part in many of the 7th Cavalry's missions. In 1868, he fought in the Washita Campaign. This was his first time fighting against Native American groups. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in December 1868.

He also joined the Yellowstone campaign in 1873. In 1874, he was part of the Black Hills expedition. Smith was the first lieutenant of Company A. However, he was assigned to lead Company E. This change meant he would be with Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Death at Little Bighorn

Algernon Smith died during the Battle of the Little Bighorn. His body was not found with his own soldiers. Instead, it was found near General Custer. They were on a spot known as "Last Stand Hill." Smith was quickly buried on the battlefield.

In 1877, his body was moved. He was reburied at the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. This cemetery is in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. His wife, Nettie, passed away in 1903.
