Allegany is a small, unincorporated community in Coos County, Oregon, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but it still has people living there.
Allegany is located where two rivers, the East Fork Millicoma River and the West Fork Millicoma River, join together. They form the main Millicoma River, which then flows into the Coos River. Oregon Route 241 passes right through Allegany, and the community is next to the Elliott State Forest.
Just northeast of Allegany, you can find the Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area. This state park is home to two beautiful waterfalls, each about 100 feet (30 meters) tall! These falls are surrounded by an old-growth forest, which means the trees there are very old and have been growing for a long time without being cut down.
History of Allegany
A post office was opened in Allegany on March 25, 1893. It's not known why the spelling "Allegany" was chosen for this place. The spelling "Allegany" is often used for places in New York, while "Allegheny" is more common in Pennsylvania. William Vincamp was the very first postmaster in Allegany.
For many years, getting around in this area was difficult because there weren't many good roads. So, people often traveled by river. A small steamboat named the Welcome helped with transportation. This boat, built in 1919, was only about 14 tons and used a gasoline engine. It traveled up the Coos River from Marshfield to Allegany until 1948.
