Almaden is a small rural town in Queensland, Australia. It is located in the Shire of Mareeba. In 2021, only 41 people lived in the area of Almaden. It's a quiet place, known for its history and its connection to the railway.

Where is Almaden?
Almaden is on a railway line that goes from Mareeba to Mungana. This line is part of the Tablelands railway line. The Almaden railway station helps people get around. Another railway line, the Etheridge railway line, starts here. It goes towards Forsayth.
Important roads also pass through Almaden. The Burke Developmental Road goes from the east to the north-west. The Ootann Road heads south from the town.
A Look Back in Time
The town of Almaden got its name from a town in Spain. That Spanish town, called Almadén, was famous for its mercury mine. Our Almaden in Queensland has different minerals. These are called tripolite, also known as diatomite.
Schools played a big part in Almaden's history.
- Tate Tin Mines Provisional School opened on 17 October 1894.
- It became Tate Tin Mines State School in 1909.
- This school closed in 1924 but reopened in 1930.
- It closed for good on 31 December 1940.
Almaden Provisional School opened on 6 July 1906. It became Almaden State School in 1909. This school closed on 12 December 1997. The old school building is now a tourist park. Another school, Ootann Provisional School, was open from 1929 to about 1933.

There are no schools directly in Almaden today. The closest primary school is Chillagoe State School. It is in Chillagoe, which is a nearby town. For high school, students can go to Dimbulah State School. This school is in Dimbulah and teaches up to Year 10. For older students (Years 11 and 12), options include learning from home through distance education. Some students might also go to boarding schools.
Fun Things to Do
Almaden is a stop for the Savannahlander train. This special train runs twice a week. It travels between Cairns and Forsayth. Many people enjoy taking this train ride. It is a popular way to see the area.
